Oral history interview with Raquel Ward conducted by Claytee D. White on March 25, 2010 for the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Collection. In this interview, Ward discusses her upbringing and family background in Tierra Blanca, Veracruz, Mexico. She remembers completing nursing school in Mexico, arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1958, and attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Ward talks about moving to Boulder City, Nevada, raising her children in Las Vegas, and the increase of organized crime during the 1960s. Lastly, Ward discusses the fast growth of the Hispanic community in Las Vegas during the 1970s and Hispanic representation in political positions.

Oral history interview with Benny Binion conducted by an unknown interviewer circa 1975 to 1977. In this interview, Binion discusses his arrival to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1946 and his involvement with the town in the early 1950s. He discusses what motivated him to move, his involvement with the Las Vegas Club, and his decision to build The Westerner and eventually Binion’s Horseshoe on Fremont Street. He also describes what gaming was like in Las Vegas when he first arrived, and his interactions with other casinos such as the Flamingo, Eldorado Club, and Hotel Apache in 1951.

Abstract

The Las Vegas, Nevada Women's Softball Collection (1951-1952) contains photographic prints and negatives depicting a southern Nevada women's softball team. The team was sponsored by Wilson's Texaco Station in Boulder City, Nevada, and the women played in regional games in both southern California and southern Nevada. Photographs in the collection show the team practicing at Peterson Field in Boulder City, and celebrating and spending time together at the Mt. Charleston Lodge. The collection also contains copies of personal accounts written by team member Orpha Alveta Bowman (McBride), who recalls the prejudice some of the lesbian members faced from local community members. The originals of these handwritten accounts are held in MS-01099.

Abstract

The Blackstone Edge Studios Collection (1974, 1980-1985) contains one 16mm film of locations around Las Vegas, Nevada produced by Blackstone Edge Studios. Footage was filmed by Philip Clayton-Thompson who is a co-owner, director, and producer for Blackstone Edge Studios. Also included are photographic transparencies and prints of the Primadonna Monorail, constructed by VSL Corporation at the Primadonna Hotel and Casino in Stateline (now Primm), Nevada.
