Warren V. Turner oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Warren V. Turner conducted by Arnol D. Wilks on March 10, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Turner discusses arriving to Boulder City, Nevada in 1948 while working for the Bureau of Reclamation. Turner recalls aboveground testing of atomic weapons at the Nevada Test Site and describes the magnitude of the blasts. Turner also describes the development of Las Vegas, Nevada, specifically the growth in population, casinos, and hotels. Turner later discusses the natural environment surrounding the Las Vegas valley.

Oral history interview with Byron Underhill conducted by Joyce Moore on March 20, 2002 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Underhill discusses his father who owned multiple businesses in Las Vegas, Nevada. Underhill also discusses taking over one of those businesses, the bottling plant, serving in the United States Army, being a private pilot who worked with Search and Rescue, and playing in various bands.

Oral history interview with Benny Binion conducted by William Hernstadt on February 8, 1976 for the Las Vegas, Nevada KVVU Channel Five television program "Spotlight." Binion talks briefly about the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino, the process of running a successful casino, publicity, and potential city improvements that could help business. He likes the idea of more hotel rooms, a convention center, a weekend train to and from Los Angeles, California, and dislikes the idea of a pedestrian mall in the downtown area.

Oral history interview with Minister Vance "Stretch" Sanders conducted by Claytee D. White on June 8, 2022 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: A Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Sanders recalls his early childhood in Chicago, Illinois and his family's eventual move to Las Vegas, Nevada to escape the crime in Chicago. Sanders discusses hosting his first public rally in Las Vegas and the many rallies and protests that followed. The first rally took place on August 3, 2015 on behalf of Sandra Bland.

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Dunes Hotel and Casino Promotional and Publicity Materials consist of newspaper clippings, artifacts, show programs, and other promotional and publicity materials about the Dunes Hotel and Casino. Also included in this collection is a videotape recording of Channel 13's live coverage of the Dunes Hotel implosion in 1993.

Oral history interview with Robert A. Lynn conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres on January 29, 2007 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview, Lynn discusses his background, education in Las Vegas, Nevada, his parents and siblings, his military career, and his professional and work training that prepared him for his first position as a groundskeeper at UNLV in 1986. He continues to discuss his career at UNLV as he rose from groundskeeper to Ground Facilities Supervisor, mentioning various project highlights, construction projects, and his supervisory style that helped create a close-working team.

In this interview, Ju recalls moving to the United States with his family at the age of ten. He discusses his relationships with his parents, how it has changed, and experiencing discrimination and racism at work and as an individual. While he lives in New York, Ju visits Las Vegas, Nevada regularly and shares how he finds it more inclusive and welcoming compared to New York or Korea.
