Abstract

Oral history interviews with Sherry Tuliwa McKnight and Tony Terrell conducted by Claytee D. White on October 20, 2016 and December 01, 2016 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In the first interview, McKnight and her son Terrell discuss their upbringing and the significance of sports in their lives. Terrell talks about playing football at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), becoming the football team captain, and the role that sports play in the lives of minority youth. In the second interview, Terrell remembers the end of his football career, and becoming an academic advisor at UNLV. Lastly, McKnight talks about obtaining a master’s degree later in her life, and the importance of scholarships for minority students.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Don Cunningham conducted by Claytee D. White on January 13, 2017, January 26, 2017, and February 10, 2017 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In the first interview, Cunningham discusses his upbringing in St. Louis, Missouri and his early interest in music. He talks about becoming a musician in the military, and traveling around the world to play in the military bands. In the second interview, Cunningham remembers the transition out of the military, becoming a freelance musician, and arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1969. In the final interview, Cunningham discusses his involvement with the Las Vegas Jazz Society, and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Juliana Urtubey conducted by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach on May 24, 2021 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Born in Colombia, Julia was able to immigrate with her family to the United States when she was six years old. The family lived in Chicago, Illinois and later in Phoenix, Arizona. Juliana moved to Las Vegas in 2013 and taught learners with special education needs at the elementary level. In 2021, she was named the National Teacher of the Year, the first Latina and the only Nevadan to ever hold the distinction. Juliana personally received the award from Dr. Jill Biden.

Oral history interview with Shirley and Mackie Edmond, Althia Taylor, and Larry McCollum conducted by Claytee D. White on May 30, 2021 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project.

Shirley, Althia, Mackie, and Larry discuss their experiences growing up and living in Las Vegas, Nevada including their respective employment histories; Shirley and Althia worked in the postal service for over 30 years, Mackie worked at the Stardust Hotel and Casino, and Larry mentored children as a sports coach for the Clark County School District (CCSD). The narrators talked about businesses that thrived on the Westside and ended their discussion with how COVID-19 has impacted their families and daily lives.

Oral history interview with Trula McGee conducted by Claytee D. White on March 17, 2021 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project.

Trula McGee talks about her experiences growing up in a military family and her time as a student and young adult in the Westside community. She also discusses her employment as a Keno writer and runner at the Sands Hotel and Casino, Castaways Hotel and Casino, and the Silver Slipper Gambling Hall and Saloon and how this led to her meeting both Wayne Newton and Marvin Gaye.

Subjects discussed include: Carver Park; Basic High School; Nevada State Bank; Jackson Ave.; Golden West Shopping Center; Reuben's Supper Club; and Larry's Sight and Sound.

Abstract

Oral history interview of Fateen Seifullah conducted by Claytee D. White on October 28, 2020 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project.

Fateen Seifullah was born in Compton, California and was surrounded by gang culture from a very early age. As a teenager when he and his family moved to Las Vegas in the early 1980s, he began participating in gang activity. Fateen describes his knowledge about gang operations, drug "rules," and prison time. He also discusses his participation as a Muslim mosque leader in the Historic Westside Las Vegas, his "Iman" (faith and beliefs), and his work in the past decade to push gang activity and drug use out of the community.

Subjects discussed include: Compton, California; drug culture; Muslim philosophy; Iman; and Code of Justice.

George Ladd Papers

The George Ladd Papers are comprised of a scrapbook dating from 1903 to 1906 that documents the final years of George Ladd, who was involved with the Bullfrog Mine in Rhyolite, Nevada. The scrapbook contents include personal correspondence, certificates of assays, telegrams, mining purchases, bank deposit slips, and correspondence between Ladd and the Bullfrog Mining Company.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Valerie Anthony and Veronica McKinney conducted by Claytee D. White on April 04, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Anthony and McKinney talk about their early lives and growing up in a military family. They remember their father's service with the United States Air Force, living on military bases, and traveling around the world. Anthony talks about enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1971, the discrimination she experienced in the military, and how women were treated in the military at the time. Later, McKinney describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1998, raising her children there, and completing her degree as a non-traditional student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Lastly, Anthony and McKinney talk about their participation in book clubs and other community involvement.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Vadeem Volansky, Anastasia Popovich, and Amdrei Skoro conducted by Jan Biggerstaff in approximately 2008 for the Let;s Runaway and Join the Circus Oral History Project. In this interview, Volansky reflects upon his upbringing in Ukraine, his entrance into circus college, and his competitions before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to perform in shows such as Mystere. Popovich discusses her upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada, while her father worked in a show at the Circus Circus. She reflects upon having the show animals at home, how she trained for the circus, and eventually worked in the theater at the Aladdin, later Planet Hollywood. Skoro discusses his upbringing in Chelyabinsk, Russia, military operations before the city name was changed to Ozersk, and his entrance into circus school. Abstract

Oral history interviews with Maude Woo conducted by Barbara Tabach on February 11, 2007 and February 25, 2007 for Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In these interviews, Woo discusses her early childhood in Korea, taking care of her siblings, and difficult memories of war. Later, she discusses travelling to the United States and having foster parents, and going to college for nursing. She married her first husband and they had two sons, David and John. The family moved to Orange County, California where Maude raised the family and eventually started a private practice. Later, Woo divorced her first husband. She married her current husband, Leland, in 2011. She discusses her family, the importance religion has in her life, and coming to Las Vegas, Nevada to retire.
