The Genovese Family oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with the Genovese Family conducted by Shirley Emerson on August 20, August 29, September 05, and September 13, 2013 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods: An Oral History Project of Ward 3. In these interviews, the Genoveses (Robert, Ann, Joseph, Patrick, and David) discuss their lives in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1963. The family discusses the growth and development of Las Vegas and Robert and Anne's home in McNeil Estates. They talk about Robert’s career as a musician, the city’s recession in 1964, and the influence of organized crime in Las Vegas. Joseph recalls the development of Henderson and Boulder City, Nevada, his career in land development, and local government in the 1970s and 1980s. Later, Patrick discusses Las Vegas’ dependency on gaming industry taxes and the need for industry diversification. He talks about the lack of government investment in public goods, public education challenges, and water supply issues. Lastly, David recalls public school integration, attending a sixth grade center, and what it was like when the Nevada Test Site conducted nuclear explosions.

Valda and Esper Esau Collection on Lido de Paris

Abstract

The Valda and Esper Esau Collection on Lido de Paris (1954-2014) mainly consists of newspaper clippings, ephemera, and programs documenting the career of entertainer Valda Esau, who danced in the Lido de Paris show at the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in the late 1950s. Other materials in this collection include show programs for other shows held in France featuring the Bluebell Girls dance troupe such as the original Lido de Paris. The collection also includes invitation and photographs featuring Esper Esau from Pzazz! '70, a show that was produced by Donn Arden at the Desert Inn Hotel.

Cliff Olsen Professional Papers

Abstract

The collection, 1949 to 2006, was compiled by Clifford Olsen, a containment physicist at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). It consists of research notes and working papers written by Olsen and other scientists, publications, epoxy aggregate samples, work-related correspondence, nuclear-test-event data, and interviews conducted by Olsen with work colleagues involved with the NTS.

Abstract

The Desert Fishes Council Records (1969-1988) consist of resolutions, meeting minutes, symposium programs, agendas, and press releases of the Desert Fishes Council (DFC). The organization is devoted to the study and preservation of Southwestern desert fishes, notably the desert pupfish. The DFC records reflect efforts to bring the plight of desert fishes to the attention of academics and the public as well as highlight the worth of desert lands within the American environmental movement.

Bill Campbell Costume Designs

Abstract

The Bill Campbell Costume Designs (1954-1978) are comprised of original costume design sketches created by designer Bill Campbell for a number of Donn Arden's stage productions, including Pzazz!, Hello America, and Hello Hollywood Hello that were staged in the Crystal Room at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, Nevada during the 1960s and 1970s. The collection also contains some sketches for other revues held in Los Angeles, California and Reno, Nevada. The majority of items in the collection are original drawings with attached fabric swatches; a number of items are xeroxed reproductions.

The Clifford Jones Family Papers (1900-2005) consist of awards for community service, newspaper clippings, correspondence sent to family members by Cliff Jones when he was in the military, and photograph albums of the Jones family. Clifford Jones was the 20th Lieutenant Governor for Nevada from 1947 to 1954.
