Abstract

Oral history interview with Denis Lee Askew conducted by Su Kim Chung on August 28, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Askew discusses Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s and 1960s and his experiences working as a busboy at the Sands Hotel in the late 1960s. He discusses seeing shows and recalls watching the Copa Girls show. Later, Askew describes his band, The Universe, and talks about getting a radio show where he discusses the music scene in Las Vegas. Lastly, Askew discusses the changes in Las Vegas and talks about the Music Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Earl and Gloria Alger discuss how they met at the Mormon Church and lived in Las Vegas, Nevada their entire lives. Gloria's great-grandfather Torrel Lewis was one of the original pioneers from Salt Lake City, so they talk of pioneer days in Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Cathrine Abrigo conducted by Cecilia Winchell and Stefani Evans on July 20, 2022 for the Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Abrigo describes her early life in the Philippines, where she attended Catholic school and briefly studied medical technology in college. She describes immigrating to Las Vegas, Nevada with her husband and the difficulty of leaving her immediate family behind. She discusses working for the Cosmopolitan in 2011 and becoming deeply involved with the Culinary Workers Union Local 226. Throughout the interview, Abrigo talks about religion, food, and her activism with the Culinary Union.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Paul Hejmanowski conducted by Lois M. Goodall on March 13, 2014 for West Charleston Neighborhoods-- An Oral History Project of Ward 1. Paul Hejmanowski in this interview recalls his family moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1972 and his first impressions of the city and its people. Hejmanowski then discusses his children’s activities at Lorenzi Park and traveling to an area near Caliente to cut down their Christmas tree. He also discusses how the law and justice community has changed in Las Vegas, given the rise in the amount of lawyers in Las Vegas and the advent of modern office technology.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jack K. Leavitt conducted by Alick Dziabczenko on February 28, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Leavitt describes his life as a child living in early Las Vegas, Nevada during the Great Depression. Leavitt also describes seeing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's speech at Hoover (Boulder) Dam, the plane crash that resulted in Carole Lombard's death, and the construction of Nellis Air Force Base. The reaction of Las Vegas, Nevada to the outbreak of World War II is discussed, but information is limited, as Leavitt explains he was deployed in North Africa and Italy during the majority of that period. Finally, Leavitt talks about his career as a real estate broker in Las Vegas, and how real estate has evolved in the city.
