Abstract

Oral history interview with Dorothy Lee conducted by Claytee D. White on June 02, 2016 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Lee discusses growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada and recalls horse riding from Paradise Township to downtown Las Vegas. After moving to the John S. Park neighborhood, she attended Las Vegas High School and worked at the Huntridge Theater as an usher. She also discusses her time working as an elevator operator at the Riviera and how she became a Rhythmette in her second year in high school.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Mike Smith conducted by Claytee D. White on August 17, 2018 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Smith discusses his early life in Santa Clara, California and his early interest in art. He describes the first drawings he did, drawing political cartoons, and drawing about controversial ideas. Smith remembers moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1983 and becoming the cartoonist for the Las Vegas Sun. Smith describes his process in drawing political cartoons, working alongside Hank Greenspun, and newspaper syndication. Lastly, Smith explains the meaning of some of his cartoons.

Nathan discusses working in human relations for Wynn Resorts and opening all of Steve Wynn's properties around the world starting with the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also discusses how the casino industry evolved to allow management and labor to work for the interests of both.

Sheehan discusses growing up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, serving in the United States Marine Corps in the 1940s, becoming a certified public accountant, and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1962. He then talks about starting his own accounting firm in 1971 and retiring in 1997.

In this interview Lee Scroggins describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in March of 1980 and starting work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in an administration position. She talked about the various departments she worked for, her brief hiatus from the university from 1985 to 1988, and her retirement.

Oral history interview with Harry Brown conducted by James Hopkins for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. During the interview, Brown describes some of his experiences from being in the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, the equivalent of a modern search and rescue team, which was deputized by the sheriff. Brown additionally describes the tradition of the Helldorado parades, in which he was a part, and he provides his overall thoughts on living in Las Vegas, Nevada.
