Olive, Fern S., 1895-1992

Fern S. Olive was a Las Vegas, Nevada elementary school teacher. She was born September 24, 1895 in Minnesota. Olive later married Wilford Clay Olive on June 5, 1928 and lived in Las Vegas for sixty-five years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Olive died July 16, 1992.

Proctor, Cork, 1932-

Cork Proctor was born on July 22, 1932 in Wisconsin. His family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1940s, where he attended Las Vegas High School. During the 1950s he worked as a valet at the El Rancho Vegas, and then as a lifeguard at the Sahara Hotel and Casino. He later worked as a musician, traveling with several bands until the 1970s, when he first performed his stand-up comedy act. His career as a comedian, which spanned over 40 years, took him to various venues across the United States. Cork Proctor currently resides in Ecuador.

"El Cortez Hotel and Casino is the longest continuously running hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Opened in 1941, it was so successful that it attracted the attention of Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Gus Greenbaum, and Moe Sedway, all whom purchased it in 1945.

In 1963 El Cortez was purchased by Jackie Gaughan, and it has been run as a family business ever since, even through its sale to Ike Gaming in 2008.
