Abstract

Oral history interview with Otis R. Harris Jr. and Tisha Harris conducted by Claytee White on September 15, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In their interview Otis and Tisha talk about growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada during a time of racial change. Otis discusses working for the convention and visitors authority, working on economic development for West Las Vegas, and serving as an Assemblyman. Sylvia "Tisha" Harris discusses working as a teacher in Las Vegas for 29 years. Tisha and Otis also discuss how they have remained active in the community and operate Unibex Global Corporation.

Oral history interview with Steve Evans conducted by Claytee D. White on June 15, 2010 for the Voices of the Historic John S. Park neighborhood Oral History Project. In this interview Steve Evans discusses living in Henderson, Nevada and owning a home previously owned by Las Vegas assembly person Flora Dugan, who was a mentor of his. He then talks about his efforts to recover information about his John S. Park home. He also talks about the thriving commerce of Fremont Street shifting to Maryland Parkway, the beginning of the Arts District, and the impact of events on the John S. Park neighborhood sense of community.

Meyers discusses her life in great detail, from living in concentration camps to owning Las Vegas, Nevada casinos, including the Casbah Hotel and the Queen of Hearts Hotel (now the Four Queens Hotel and Casino).

Abstract

Roundtable discussion with University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) engineers Ramon Martinez, Richard Wyman, Herbert C. Wells, and Robert Skaggs conducted by Dave Emerson on May 6, 2006 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this discussion, the engineers talked about how they joined UNLV and pursued careers in their respective fields of engineering. They also discussed the creation and development of engineering courses at UNLV, Geological Engineering and Dynamics. Martinez, Wyman, Wells, and Skaggs also detail their individual undergraduate education at different colleges before coming to UNLV.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Qiong X. Liu conducted by Claytee D. White on June 08, 2016 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Liu discusses her upbringing in Beijing, China and later Shanghai, China. She recalls receiving a full scholarship to attend the University of Arizona, her initial reactions to arriving to the United States, and moving to North Las Vegas, Nevada in 1999. Liu talks about the Apex Industrial Park in North Las Vegas, population growth, and the increase of homes being built in the area. She explains the importance in diversifying the North Las Vegas economy and supporting local businesses. Lastly, Liu lists financial challenges that North Las Vegas has faced and her work as City Manager for North Las Vegas.

Danit Farwell oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Danit Farwell conducted by Barbara Tabach on March 27, 2018 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Farwell discusses her early life in Morocco, antisemitism she experienced there, and being sent to Israel as a young girl. She recalls the hardships she faced while traveling to Israel, living in a kibbutz, and completing a teaching seminar to become a grade school teacher. Farwell talks about arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1974, her first impression of the city, and her decision to stay. Farwell describes becoming a member of Temple Beth Sholom, being a teacher there, and going to card dealing school. Lastly, Farwell talks about being a part-time card dealer at different casinos on the Strip.

Oral history interview with Sandra MacNally Stesch conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres on May 28, 2008 for the All That Jazz Oral History Project. Stesch begins by describing her upbringing in Scotland, her interest in becoming a singer, and immigrating to the United States in 1963. She details living and working as a cocktail waitress and a nanny in various states before eventually moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1967. Stesch discusses becoming a successful singer in Las Vegas under the stage name "Sandra MacTavish," singing at different casinos such as The Mint and Union Plaza, and meeting her husband, Hal Stesch. She concludes by discussing her life after her singing career, how Las Vegas has changed, and her family.

Judy Mack oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Judy Mack conducted by Barbara Tabach on June 2, 2015 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Judy Mack discusses her survival during the Holocaust and her move to San Francisco, California at the age of eleven. She discusses her later move to Reno, Nevada with her husband and son where she grew her family and began a successful pawn shop enterprise before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1990. She goes into detail on her family history as well as her family's current involvement with the Jewish community. Mack also speaks of her involvement with the Sperling Kronberg Mack Holocaust Resource Center and the other ways she has recorded her history of the Holocaust.
