Abstract

Oral history interview with Royal Herald Byron III conducted by Claytee D. White on March 19, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Byron discusses his upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada and growing up in the Westside community. He talks about his early interest in barbering, attending barber school in Los Angeles, California, and establishing a barber school in Las Vegas. Byron describes serving the homeless community and the importance of sanitation as a barber. Lastly, Byron discusses the expansion of his barber school to include locations in Henderson, the Westside, and Reno, Nevada.

Abstract

The William Fulton Papers (1993-1996) contains Fulton's research files used in writing his book, The Reluctant Metropolis: the Politics of Urban Growth in Los Angeles. The materials primarily consist of newspaper clippings that cover stories on the growth of Los Angeles residents moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, water, economic development, and the master planned community of Summerlin. The majority of newspaper clippings are from the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Las Vegas Sun. The materials also include reports on economic and housing development in Southern Nevada as well as drafts of the book's Chapter 12, "Cloning Los Angeles" which discusses the growth of Las Vegas throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Abstract

The Las Vegas Board of City Commissioners Records Regarding Water Supply (1927-1940) include correspondence, resolutions, petitions, application for a permit, and newspaper clippings. The records concern water shortages in the City of Las Vegas, Nevada due in part to wasteful water usage and many of the documents refer to City Ordinance No. 247. Several items are signed by Walter R. Bracken, Vice President and Agent of the Company, and A. M. Folger, Assistant Agent.

Jean Olen Papers

Abstract

The Jean Olen Papers (1994-2008) document Olen's career as a taxicab driver in Las Vegas, Nevada. Materials include Olen's personal taxicab driver's permit, medical examiner certificate, and other placards found in taxicabs regarding common questions, such as tipping, no smoking, and airport fees. Also included are newspaper clippings about taxicab drivers in Las Vegas, Nevada and four issues of Trip Sheet, a local magazine for taxicab, limousine, trolley, and shuttle drivers, which features letters to the editor written by Olen.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Kirk Kerkorian conducted by K.J. Evans on February 10, 1999 for the Las Vegas Review-Journal First 100 Oral History Project. In this interview Kirk Kerkorian discusses Howard Hughes and Jerry Williams and how they were two men who he respected and learned from. He also talks about how Jerry Williams introduced him to Las Vegas, Nevada. He then discusses how he was ecstatic when he saw Las Vegas for the first time and how he helped build Bally's, The International, and the MGM Grand Hotel.

Joseph C. Ives Personal Correspondence

Abstract

The Joseph C. Ives Personal Correspondence consists of seventeen photocopied letters between United States Army Corps of Topographic Engineers Lt. Joseph C. Ives and his wife, Cora Semmes Ives, between September 1857 and June 1858. Ives was in command of a U.S. Army expedition whose mission was to explore the region of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon, and to establish the limit of navigation of the Colorado River. The correspondence is largely personal in nature, however, it is a useful supplement to the official report documenting the voyage, "Report upon the Colorado River of the West; Explored in 1857-1858."

Oral history interview with Don Laughlin conducted by A. D. Hopkins on June 13, 1999 for the Las Vegas Review-Journal First 100 Oral History Project. In this interview, Laughlin discusses his early life in Minnesota, his start in gambling, and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1952. Laughlin describes how he started his business including the process of obtaining licenses and buying property. Lastly, Laughlin talks about gaming competition in Arizona, his children, and his business' expansion.

July 5, 1962, December 4, 1963. Charles Rozaire's handwritten memoir of his career at the Nevada State Museum. Also included in this folder are newspaper clippings, The Newsletter of the Archaeological Survey Association of Southern California from the summer of 1962, a Sierra Club newsletter from late 2013 or early 2014, and an obituary page about Richard Shutler Jr. in the Society for American Archaeology Record magazine.
