Clinton Wright and Aaron Mayes oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Clinton Wright and Aaron Mayes conducted by Barbara Tabach on February 21, 2017 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Wright discusses being a photographer of the Westside community in Las Vegas, Nevada. He recalls creating his first photographic prints, being a freelance photographer, and experimenting with photography techniques. Wright talks about his employment with the Las Vegas Voice newspaper, and the types of jobs he was assigned while working there. Later, Mayes discusses curating Wright’s photograph collection, and displaying it at the Westside School. Mayes describes the approach he took when curating the photograph collection and the historical significance of the materials. Lastly, Wright explains the importance of documenting African American life in the Westside community.

Abstract

The Nevada Division of State Parks Records consist of materials produced or collected between 1863 and 1978 by the Nevada Division of State Parks. The collection includes materials recovered at Spring Mountain Ranch belonging to the Kiel, George, and Wilson families. The majority of the collection consists of administrative records and correspondence from the Nevada Division of State Parks. It also contains a photograph album of images taken during excavation efforts at the Pueblo Grande de Nevada archaeological site.

Abstract

The Las Vegas Art League Scrapbooks are comprised of two scrapbooks, housed in a binder and a pressbook, that were presented as an annual report to the American Artists Professional League in 1967 by the Las Vegas Art League in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection includes newspaper clippings, photographs, and information about the activities of the Las Vegas Art League during 1966.

Abstract

The UNLV Athletics Programs and Memorabilia Collection (1974-2002) is comprised of University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) athletics publications, team yearbooks, and game day programs for UNLV football and men's basketball teams. The majority of the collection documents the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team during the 1980s and 1990s. Other materials include Big West Conference programs and UNLV athletics memorabilia such as a pom-pom, football foundation member stadium seat cushion, plastic megaphone, and mug.

Abstract

The UNLV University Libraries Collection on Las Vegas Show Costume Design is comprised of work from several desginers who created costumes for various Las Vegas, Nevada shows. The designs are undated but appear to date from the 1940s to 1970s. The collection includes works from the following designers: Jean Devlyn, Anne Guertin, Larry Merritt, Ladd, Josephine Spinedi, Corrado Colabucci, and also includes unsigned designs from unknown artists. The collection also designs for Matt Gregory Productions. Most of the designs do not include show information.

Abstract

The Las Vegas Bugle Collection on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) History (1984-2002) consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera chronicling issues of the LGBT communities in Nevada. In addition to records of the newspaper, the Las Vegas Bugle, the collection also contains documents pertaining to the founding of the Gay Community Service Center of Las Vegas, Nevada; Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG); local political campaigns; and photographs documenting LGBT life and culture in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Evelyn Stuckey Papers

The Evelyn Stuckey Papers date from 1940 to 1972 and document Stuckey's experience as a physical education teacher at Las Vegas High School (LVHS) in Las Vegas, Nevada and founder of the LVHS Rhythmettes dance group. The collection contains personal and educational materials from Stuckey’s college years, personal correspondence, and photographs. It also contains materials documenting the Rhythmettes' activities including travel plans, posters and fliers, news clippings, and group rosters.
