Abstract

The Thomas Rodriguez Professional Papers (1974-2020) document Rodriguez's years of work and achievements in the political, educational, and social advancement of the Latinx community in Southern Nevada. The collection contains research files on the Latinx community of Las Vegas, Nevada, newspaper articles and manuscripts written by Rodriguez, and materials from his many years of involvement and work with local organizations including the Latin Chamber of Commerce, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Hispanic Educators Association of Nevada, and the Latino Youth Leadership Conference. Materials include conference proceedings, symposium and event programs, as well as newspaper articles, correspondence, and administrative files gathered by Rodriguez over the years of researching and working within the community.

Monroe Williams was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1940 and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1943. He was a soldier in the Navy, one of the first black fire fighters in Las Vegas, a proud member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples, and operated a real estate company and a property management company.

Cathie Millson was born on August 24, 1952 in South Dakota. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1984 with her husband and her one-year-old daughter. After having her next two children, her family moved into the Rancho Bel Air neighborhood.

Greg Venezia was born September 9, 1968 and was raised in Staten Island, New York. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1980. His wife, Natalie, shares his career as a bartender. Venezia also volunteers for the homeless by bringing them food and water when needed.

Susan Baller was born May 3, 1942 and graduated from Las Vegas High School. She married her husband, Michael, in 1960 at the Temple Beth Sholom. Baller raised her children to be close in the Las Vegas Jewish community.

Mitchell A. Cobeaga was born in Lovelock, Nevada on December 7th, 1917. He is of Basque descent. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in Janruary of 1967. He was in the United States Air Force for 28 years and was the Vice President of the Nevada State Bank in Las Vegas, Nevada.
