Abstract

Oral history interview with Elizabeth, Leonard, and William Carpi conducted by Claytee D. White on January 14, 2009 for the Heart to Heart Oral History Project. In this interview, Elizabeth and Leonard discuss their upbringings and arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1954. William, son of Elizabeth and Leonard, recalls his childhood in Las Vegas, performing with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) wind and jazz bands, and his early interest in optometry. Lastly, Leonard and William talk about becoming optometrists, the Las Vegas health care system during the 1960s, and fitting contact lenses for the first time.

Oral history interview with Sanje Sedera conducted by Kristel Peralta, Cecilia Winchell, Ayrton Yamaguchi, and Stefani Evans on April 16, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. Sanje Sedera discusses growing up in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, with his family. He shares his educational history, moving from Sri Lanka to Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia as a high schooler to learn English before immigrating to the United States to attend Idaho State University. Sedera discusses the political unrest and civil war that took place in Sri Lanka between the Tamil and Sinhalese people, and how he grew to appreciate political activism instilled in him by his paternal grandparents. Sedera shares his employment history working as a manager for K-Mart, an opportunity that brought him to Las Vegas, as well as his entrepreneurial pursuits of owning a mortgage business and becoming a realtor. He talks about the financial crisis of 2008 that led to losing his business, his attempts to run for public office, and how he helped to form Nevada's Asian American Democratic Caucus. Sedera concludes with a discussion of his Buddhist practice and how these philosophies have shaped his life.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jane Greenspun Gale conducted by Barbara Tabach on January 31, 2018 and February 09, 2018 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Gale recalls attending Las Vegas High School, desegregation of schools, and what is was like growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1960s. Gale then recalls the anti-war position taken by the Las Vegas Sun, her decision to attend the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and her legal suit against the state of Nevada for the right of eighteen year olds to vote. In her second interview, she discusses the Nevada Test Site, and protests of the 1980s.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Brenda Manlove Williams and Johnny Williams conducted by Claytee D. White on April 18, 2016 and May 03, 2016 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In the first interview, Brenda discusses her early life in Nashville, Tennessee and attending Fisk University. She talks about being a member of The Fisk Jubilee Singers and later transferring to Tennessee State University. Brenda recalls moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1972, her employment at Caesars Palace as a cocktail waitress, and the nightlife entertainment at the time. Lastly, Brenda discusses the social and political divides in the African American community of Las Vegas. In the second interview, Johnny describes being one of the first African American card dealers and pit bosses. He talks about his employment at Caesars Palace and changes in the gaming industry. Lastly, Brenda discusses her employment with Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC).

Oral history interview with Harry Helfrich and William Grant conducted by Claytee D. White on April 15, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Helfrich discusses his early life in Pennsylvania and enlisting to the United States Army Airborne Division. He talks about his experience with firearms, arriving to Boulder City, Nevada in 1987, and becoming a member of the Boulder City Rifle and Pistol Club. Helfrich remembers becoming president of the Club, and Grant talks about his role as the secretary and treasurer for the Club. Lastly, Helfrich and Grant discuss the Club’s youth programs, and the increase of Club members.

Oral history interview with Valerie Anthony and Veronica McKinney conducted by Claytee D. White on April 04, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Anthony and McKinney talk about their early lives and growing up in a military family. They remember their father's service with the United States Air Force, living on military bases, and traveling around the world. Anthony talks about enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1971, the discrimination she experienced in the military, and how women were treated in the military at the time. Later, McKinney describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1998, raising her children there, and completing her degree as a non-traditional student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Lastly, Anthony and McKinney talk about their participation in book clubs and other community involvement.
