Abstract

The Mabel Hoggard Papers (1903-2011) contain materials related to Hoggard's career as a Las Vegas, Nevada elementary school teacher, her research and civic interests in Las Vegas's predominantly African American Westside communities, and her engagement with civil rights issues. The collection also contains materials about Hoggard's life, including biographical newspaper articles about her childhood, education, work, and family. The collection includes lesson plans, scrapbooks, awards, correspondence, photographs, and physical objects such as a vinyl record and political pins. The bulk of the collection focuses on her life in Las Vegas from approximately 1946-1989.

Barbara Raben Collection on the Las Vegas Jewish Community

Abstract

The Barbara Raben Collection on the Las Vegas Jewish Community (1976-2018) is comprised of materials collected by Barbara Raben that document her personal life and her involvement with the Las Vegas, Nevada Jewish community, specifically the Hadassah Southern Nevada Chapter and the Jewish Family Service Agency (JFSA) of Clark County, Nevada. Hadassah and JFSA records consist of photographs and programs from events held by the organizations. Materials also document Raben's business, The Candy Factory, and her connections to the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning.

Walking Box Ranch Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Walking Box Ranch Collection (1880-1979, bulk 1930-1945) contains digital images compiled by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Public Lands Institute. The collection consists of images of the Walking Box Ranch (Searchlight, Nevada), the Mojave Desert, and the Bell Family, consisting of American film stars Rex Bell, Clara Bow, and their children. There are also candid and professional photographs of Rex Bell and Clara Bow taken at various locations, some of which include friends and other family members, as well as a large number of unidentified film stills from Rex Bell movies. Images in this collection are from Bell family photograph albums and assorted prints, and were reformatted into digital images by the UNLV Public Lands Institute.

Gutiérrez, José Luis, 1941-

José Luis Gutiérrez is a self-made entrepreneur and icon in Las Vegas, Nevada, who immigrated at a young age from his hometown in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. José’s childhood memories are filled with nostalgic and loving stories from being raised by his grandmother to working at his uncle’s mechanic shop from a young age. José remembers his childhood as a tough one since he had to start working early in life and did not get to finish high school even, but he relates how his mother always motivated him to do big things in life.

Abstract

The collection is primarily comprised of photographs shot by photo enthusiast and Congregation Ner Tamid member, Gil Shaw. Photographs primarily depict events such as annual meetings, social events, and High Holy Day services held at and by Congregation Ner Tamid from 2004 to 2014. Also included are photographs depicting the 1983 construction of Congregation Ner Tamid's new campus in Henderson, Nevada.

Irving Hirshon Photographs

Abstract

The Irving Hirshon Photographs are comprised of 55 color slide photographs taken by Irving Hirshon in 1971 of Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, downtown Las Vegas, and the Las Vegas Strip. Hirshon is believed to have taken the slides in the summer of 1971 on a West Coast trip to celebrate his twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Gay Kauffman Nevada Test Site Papers

Abstract

The collection includes materials from the Nevada Test Site (1955-1967) including newsletters published by the Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Co., Inc. and photographs of Southern Nevada flora, fauna, and archaeology. It also includes photographs of test explosions at the Nevada Test Site, as well as photographs documenting a visit from North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) officials and a visit from John F. Kennedy to the Nevada Test Site. The collection also contains an oversized poster of an atomic explosion and one of a nuclear rocket development station.
