Tubb, Robert M., 1906-1980

Robert Montgomery Tubb Jr. was born to Kathryn “Kitty” Marbaker and Robert Tubb on May 16, 1906 in Crown King, Arizona. The family lived in Ash Meadows, Nevada and operated a general store and other shops at Death Valley Junction. His parents divorced, both remained in the area. He married Lorraine Joyce McHenry in 1932 in Los Angeles, California. Tubb later returned to Nevada and lived in Ash Meadows. He died on August 30, 1980.

Sweet, Ruth, 1934-

Ruth Sweet was born April 1, 1934 in Roach, Nevada. Her grandfather was a foreman for the Union Pacific Railroad, and the family lived at various sidings along the railroad and at his ranch at Las Vegas. Her father was Mexican and her mother Black. Ms. Sweet attended kindergarten, elementary, and high school in Las Vegas. One year, 1946, was spent in Ontario, California, where she attended elementary school. She has attended night classes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Employed by the State of Nevada, Division of Health, Ms.

O'Brien, Eve, 1921-1998

Eve O’Brien was a long time food and beverage director for Sam Boyd at his properties in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born Eva Mae Christensen on September 25, 1921 in Pioche, Nevada to Rose Foster and Erastus Christensen. She was raised by her stepfather, Archie C. Emerick. She married John Cleary and later O’Brien. She died in Bowling Green, Kentucky on March 2, 1998.

Esau, Valda, 1937-

A native Australian, Valda Boyne Esau moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s to become a professional dancer. She starred in the Lido de Paris show, which debuted at the Stardust Hotel and Casino in 1958 and was one of the most popular nightlife attractions in Las Vegas in the late 1950s and 1960s. Valda Boyne Esau danced in the first and third editions of the famed production as well as the first Cést Magnifique, a Las Vegas-inspired rendition of the Parisian show.

Washington, David L., 1950?-

David L. Washington was born in Delhi, Louisiana around 1950. Washington then grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and eventually began his career as a firefighter in 1974. In 2001, he became the first African American fire chief for the City of Las Vegas.

Privott, Daryl, 1964-

Daryl Privott was hired as the facilities manager for the move from Dickerson Library into Lied. He had just completed a move at NASA and was the right person at the perfect time. Working full time at UNLV, he completed his master's and PhD degrees here before moving to Lexington, KY. HIs is a story of perfect timing, love of family, and understanding the value of a two-PhD household. HIs early life is a confluence of rural and urban; wisdom and awakening to an understanding of how the world works, and sharecropping which is a world of its own.

Davis, Dianna, 1955-

Dianna Davis worked at the Clark County School District [CCSD] after a short stint as a maid where she was accosted by a hotel visitor and worked in fear afterwards. CCSD was better; she became a baker at the location that supplied food for all the schools in the county. Her fond memory is her favorite teacher, Mrs. Moten, who instilled a pride in blackness in her African American students. [Mrs. Moten is the mother of Fred Moten, the critical thinker of our times who is Professor of Performance Studies at NY University.]

Lee White played professional football for the NY Jets, Los Angeles Rams, and San Diego Chargers. He returned to Las Vegas and entered the hotel casino industry as a dealer retiring twenty-five years later as a Vice President of Casino Operations.

Julie Kano, was born and raised in Ootsu city in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Wanting to experience life outside her town of 600 people, Julie migrated to Los Angeles and enrolled at Cal State Northridge to become a social worker. She did not complete her studies, but she did meet and marry her first husband and gave birth to her son. She arrived in Las Vegas in 2000 and now handles the business end of the restaurant Makino.
