Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. David Emerson conducted by Claytee D. White on December 21, 2005 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview Emerson discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1981 and teaching chemistry classes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He talks about building up the engineering department at UNLV through distance education for students who needed credits in math, computer skills, or electrical engineering. He then talks about promoting the idea of a strong engineering school at UNLV, and then working to gain accreditation for civil, mechanical, electrical, and other areas of engineering.

Oral history interview with Terry Miller-Newcomb conducted by Claytee D. White on October 10, 2005 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview Terry Miller-Newcomb dicusses being born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Las Vegas in the 1950s to 1970s, and her father starting the Physical Education program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She then goes on to discuss attending the University of Nevada Reno, working at the R & R Advertising company, moving back to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1980, getting a masters degree in 1987, and opening up her own private practice in marriage and family therapy in 1988.

Description

Oral history interview with Leslie Mujica conducted by Barbrara Tabach on June 2, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project and The Great Pause: Las Vegas Chronicles of the Covid-19 Pandemic. In this interview, Mujica talks about her childhood growing up in Guatemala and immigrating to Southern California with her family in 1980. She discusses her move to Las Vegas in 2005 and her employment history both in nonprofit work and in construction, which led to the pursuit of her current position as the Executive Director and Chief Marketing Officer of Las Vegas Power Professionals. Leslie also shares her educational history with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It is where she obtained her Master's Degree in Public Administration and where Leslie currently serves as a board member of the Latinx Voices Project and the Alumni Legacy Board.

Carmen discusses her personal history growing up in Barranquilla, Colombia and her professional aspirations in her present work; she is the founder of the Colombian Association of Nevada, a former member of the Professional Latina Women organization in Las Vegas, and has worked with Senator Harry Reid as a representative of the Colombian community related to voting rights and access. He talks about his employment history working nearly three decades for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' University Libraries and his role in acquiring academic materials. Oral history interview with Lori Lipman Brown conducted by Dennis McBride on September 12, 2005 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In this interview, Brown discusses Question 2 in the Nevada state elections of 2000 and 2002, which added an amendment to the Nevada constitution that banned same-sex marriage. Brown describes the process of introducing legislation that advocated for equal rights for the gay community and an incident where parties opposing her efforts hired a spy to observe her work. Lastly, Brown talks about the involvement of the Church of Latter-Day Saints and their opposition to same-sex marriage.

Oral history interview with Tim Albertson conducted by Suzanne Becker on June 15, 2007 for the Voices of the Historic John S. Park Neighborhood Oral History Project. Tim Albertson discussed how he moved into the John S. Park Neighborhood in 2005. He also talked about when his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1978, including how his mother located her accounting business in the John S. Park area. He recalled when they would shop, go to doctor appointments, and paint houses in that neighborhood when he was in middle school.
