Abstract

Oral history interviews with Liliam Lujan Hickey conducted by Layne Karafantis on March 18, 2010 and March 25, 2010 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Hickey begins her interviews describing growing up in Havana, Cuba in the 1930s, getting married at 16, and her life with her family in Cuba until they felt compelled to leave in 1960 to the United States. Hickey recounts her transition to American culture and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1964. She then discusses marrying her second husband, Tom Hickey, and her campaign for the Nevada Board of Education. Hickey also talks about a Hispanic community organization she helped created, Circulo Cuban, which eventually merged into the Latin Chamber of Commerce. Finally, she discusses how the organization promotes Hispanic culture, and her work to improve education in Las Vegas, and other community activism.

From the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas collection OH-00897. On February 27, 1977, collector Michael K. Ericksen interviewed his uncle, schoolteacher, Jack E. Howard, (born June 18th, 1920 in Dewey, Oklahoma) in his home in Overton, Nevada. This interview covers Mr. Howard’s personal experiences and recollections about Southern Nevada. Mr. Howard’s wife, Mrs. Helen Howard, is also present during this interview, which offers a thirty year local overview.

Description

Yoxen begins her interview by discussing how she first arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada to work for the U.S. State Department in the 1950s. She then describes her childhood in Alabama, competing in the Miss America pageant, and her life in Miami, Florida. Yoxen also discusses living in North Africa and Berlin, Germany while working for the State Department as a clerk. She then talks about moving around with her sister and her family, and eventually coming to Las Vegas. She describes what Las Vegas was like in the 1950s. Yoxen ends her interview with a discussion on her family, her husband's work, and their recreational activities.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with J. A. Tiberti conducted by Claytee D. White on August 17, 2000 and August 24, 2000 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Tiberti begins by discussing his family history and his upbringing in the mining town of Morley, Colorado, and later in Detroit, Michigan. He describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1941, where he worked for the United States Corps of Engineers on the construction of Nellis Air Force Base and later established his construction company, J. A. Tiberti Construction Company. Tiberti talks about being a member of the City of Las Vegas Planning Commission, the duties and responsibilities that came with being on the Planning Commission, and describes how a construction company is run. He also discusses his wife, children, and how Las Vegas has changed and grown since the 1940s.
