Virginia James oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Virginia James conducted by Claytee D. White on various dates in October and November 2004, and March and July 2005 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In the interview, James describes her experiences as a dancer with the Texas Copa Girls at the Sands Hotel and Casino, and with the Jayne Mansfield Show and Folies Bergère at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. She recalls her early life in Texas, learning how to dance, and applying to be a dancer at the Sands in 1957. James details the audition process, her first impressions of Las Vegas upon arriving, and memories of her performances. Other subjects James covers include her marriages, her children, and other occupations she held later in life.

Oral history interview with Robert Paluzzi conducted by Claytee D. White on September 05, 2006 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Paluzzi discusses his personal history and his experiences serving in the United States military in the 1940s. He talks about the Great Depression of 1929 and how that impacted his decision to join the military. Paluzzi then describes the state of the economy before and after joining the military, arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1949, and the development of the Las Vegas Strip. Later, Paluzzi shares his thoughts on organized crime and its possible connections with casino executives. He talks about the success and growth that Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino had, and his role as convention coordinator for Caesars Palace. Lastly, Paluzzi describes the growth and changes in Las Vegas and the impact that Jay Sarno had on casino development.

Oral history interview with Roy D. Baker conducted by Dennis McBride February 08, 2004 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In this interview, Baker discusses Fred Schoonmaker, a Reno, Nevada gay activist and his husband, Alfred Parkinson. Baker details their efforts to create Stonewall Park, a town for LGBTQ members in Nevada that was never realized. Schoonmaker attempted to establish Stonewall Park three times in three different locations: Silver Springs, Nevada; Rhyolite, Nevada; and Thunder Mountain, Nevada. Baker talks about his personal relationship with Schoonmaker, his opinion on Stonewall Park, and legal issues that Schoonmaker faced during the development of the town. Baker describes opposition from local residents against Stonewall Park and Schoonmaker's health after being diagnosed with HIV.

Oral history interview with Christie Young conducted by Dennis McBride on October 18, 1998 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In the interview, Young talks about her early life in Reno, Nevada and her experiences with race and sexuality during this time. She then describes attending University of Nevada, Reno in 1974, getting pregnant, having an abortion, and the social implications of abortions. Young recalls moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979 to study anthropology at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, learning about gay culture, and attending the Metropolitan Community Church. She then explains joining gay rights organizations as a straight woman, gay rights activism in the 1980s and 1990s, and stories of individuals within the Las Vegas gay community.

Oral history interview with Patricia Knox conducted by Rebecca Snetselaar and Brenda Cruz on April 13, 2016 for the Folklife Program of the Nevada Arts Council and the Oral History Research Center at UNLV Libraries. Knox begins the interview by discussing how she learned to cook and different types of fish. She describes how she cooks catfish, what sides go well with catfish, fishing, and the fresh quality of fishes in Las Vegas, Nevada. Then, Knox talks about her restaurant, how she created the menu, and problems she has had with her chefs. Lastly, she describes her family customs and cooking style.

Description

On March 13, 1976, George Apfel interviewed Nancy Craddock (born 1922 in Anaheim, California) at her home about her experiences of living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Craddock begins by discussing her move from San Diego to Nellis Air Force Base with her husband in the 1950s and their eventual move to the Twin Lakes area, at which they had their home built. She provides details about living in this area, such as the recreational activities of her children and the neighbors who lived on the same street, one of whom was a mayor of Las Vegas, Oran K. Gragson. Craddock, a medical laboratory technician, also talks briefly about her experiences while working at Sunrise Hospital, and she later describes how properties operated on the Las Vegas Strip in its early days. The interview concludes with Craddock’s knowledge on the early pioneers of Las Vegas, the formation of the university’s library, and the social conditions during the 1950s compared to those at the time of the interview.
