Description

Oral history interview with Nadine Cracraft conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 27, 2017 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. In this interview, Nadine Cracraft discusses the development of her career in child and family therapy after moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1991. While describing the work she has done, Cracraft talks about the volunteer counseling services she provided for the survivors of the October 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. She specifically mentions working with Aria staff members who were struggling with the aftermath of the shooting as well as her time spent working with First Friday to help those impacted by the traumatic event. Throughout the interview, Cracraft explains the different ways people manage their post-traumatic stress disorder and how this knowledge influenced her care of the survivors.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Moises ‘Mo’ Denis conducted by Marcela Rodriguez-Campo on January 11, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Denis discusses his upbringing in Brooklyn, New York and how his parents emigrated from Cuba. He recalls moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1967, his parents' employment at the Sands Hotel and Casino, and converting from Catholicism to Mormonism. Denis talks about the formation of a Spanish-language Church of Latter-Day Saints in Las Vegas, his missionary work in Uruguay, and describes what it felt like to return to the United States. Later, Denis discusses his involvement in public services, his efforts to elect more Latinx politicians in Nevada, and being appointed as an assemblyman for the Nevada Legislature. He talks about his focus on education issues, supporting English language learners, and immigration reform at the national level. Lastly, Dennis describes the Hispanic Caucus and becoming Nevada State Senator for District 2.

Terri Goodsell interviews Carey Burke (b. 1936 in Columbus, Ohio) about his experience living in Nevada. Burke talks about moving to and living in Henderson for a period of time before moving to Las Vegas. Burke mentions a few memorable teachers from his schooling as well as the recreational activities he took part in, such as going to Lake Mead and joining a YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) camp. After mentioning the small odd jobs as a newspaper deliverer and altar boy for the Catholic Church, Burke talks about moving to Las Vegas in 1949 and his eventual schooling at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Rancho High School. The interview then moves to a discussion on the above-ground atomic testing, including Burke’s and his sister’s experiences with the tests, and he then describes the Helldorado customs and celebrations in earlier days. Description

Oral history interview with Carl Esteban conducted by William Bailey on December 2, 2022 for the Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Esteban recalls growing up in Salinas, California in a predominantly Asian community before relocating with family to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2002. As a first generation Filipino America, Esteban's mother sacrificed her life in the Philippines to become the sole person in her family to immigrate to America. Esteban received his degree in Special Education and is currently pursuing to a master's degree in the same field. Esteban is currently a special education educator at the Yvonne Atkinson-Gates Center in North Las Vegas. Throughout the interview, Esteban discusses a wide range of topics spanning from his family migration story, his early childhood, his Filipino identity, Asian stereotypes as the model minority, and how his mentors helped shape him into the person he is today.

Mister Blair was born in Boreing, Kentucky in 1900, he then moved to Idaho in 1910 before relocating to Nevada in 1931. The interview covers the growth of Boulder City, from 1931 to 1975.
