Abstract

Oral history interview with Mabel Stone conducted by S. A. Ulsamer on August 29, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Stone begins by discussing her move to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1942 and her career as a waitress in several different casinos, including the El Rancho Hotel and Casino and the Nevada Biltmore Hotel. She describes the development of the Las Vegas Strip and her interactions with Howard Hughes. Stone also discusses her recreational activities, nuclear weapons tests, and how Las Vegas has changed.

Oral history interview with Joseph Digles conducted by Kathleen Wilcox on March 01, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Digles discusses his career as an editor of the Las Vegas Sun newspaper and the Las Vegas- Review Journal. He also describes his personal experiences with: the Riviera and Fremont Hotels, Howard Hughes, University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) early years, and assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Ellsworth, Elmo Hughes, 1911-1971

Hotel sales promotion manager Elmo Hughes Ellsworth was born in Safford, Arizona in 1911. He attended George Washington University Law School for a year until his job required him to move to San Francisco, California where he worked in sales promotion, publicity and theaters. He married Charlotte Rowberry in 1936 and a few years later they moved to the Las Vegas, Nevada. There he began working in the Security and Public Relations Department of the Basic Magnesium Company.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Gloria Freeman Dell conducted by Claytee D. White on April 05, 2011 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Dell discusses her life as a Las Vegas, Nevada showgirl and her experiences in the entertainment industry. She describes working at the Flamingo Hotel and tells several anecdotes about prominent entertainers she met or performed with, including Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald. Dell also discusses living in a barracks specifically for showgirls, being pursued romantically by Howard Hughes, and concludes the interview by singing a song from one of her former acts.
