Abstract

Oral history interviews with Shauna Hughes conducted by Stefani Evans and Claytee D. White on August 31, 2016 and October 11, 2016 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In the first interview, Hughes discusses her early life in New York and later moving to Ohio. She talks about attending John Carroll University, moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1982, and being a founding member of the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys. Hughes recalls being appointed Henderson City Attorney, the early development of Green Valley, and the rapid growth of that area. Hughes then describes the Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada (PEPCON) explosion in 1988. In the second interview, Hughes discusses her work as Henderson City Attorney. She describes collaborating with elected city officials, the development of the Galleria Mall, and the establishment of Nevada State College (NSC). Lastly, Hughes talks about community support for new infrastructure in Henderson.

The Hughes Tool Company series (1912-1990) encompasses the administrative, financial, and legal management of Hughes Tool Company. The series also includes research reports on the corporate history of Hughes Tool Company and its subsidiaries, copyright histories for films Hughes produced, and correspondence from Hughes' associates searching for reels of Hughes' films domestically and internationally.

Description

The exterior of Hughes Research Laboratories where rock bits were test-drilled in Culver City, California in the 1940s. Transcribed from note taped to back of photo: "Rock bits are test-drilled in the laboratory under conditions that duplicate, as far as is possible in the laboratory, those encountered in actual drilling. As a result, rotational speeds, loads, and fluid volume are closely controlled. The rig operator occupies a splash-proof booth above the 'cellar floor.' The instruments on his control panel provide for application and measurement of variable axial loading on the drilling bit up to 100,000 lbs., variable rotational speeds up to 400 rpm, measurement of bit penetration over a total vertical travel of 5 feet at rates up to 180 ft. per hour, and torque. On the panel, also, are several controls for the operation of mud pump and other accessory equipment."
