Description given with photo: "Cogitation Concentration Jubilation, Washington, D.C. - Three interesting studies of plane-builder, movie-maker and headline-maker Howard Hughes as he returned to the witness stand before the Senate War Investigating Committee today to answer questions relating to his wartime plane-building contracts. During his testimony today, Hughes said he wishes to absolve shipbuilder Henry Kaiser from any criticism in connection with the 200-ton flying boat that is one of the issues in the current probe. Text printed on a card included with the image: "Howard Hughes and Albert Lodwick beside Northrop Gamma, surrounded by a crowd at the Floyd Bennett Airport after breaking the record from Miami to New York in 4 hours and 21 minutes (distance 1095 miles; average speed 250 mph; high speed 290 mph). This bettered Jimmy Wedell's July 1933 record by 36 minutes. New York, New York."

Howard Hughes (left, in dark coat) noted designer, builder, and industrialist entering the hull of the Hughes Flying Boat, the largest airplane in the world, as it was nearing completion on Terminal Island in the Los Angeles Harbor. With him is Joe Petralli, assistant director of service and flight.

Howard Hughes landing in the Lockheed 14 in New York. Typed on a piece of paper attached to the image: "Howard Hughes lands in New York in flight from coast New York City-- the huge Lockheed "Flying Laboratory" of Howard Hughes, oil millionaire and air speed racer, being taxied to its hangar at Floyd Bennet field here, July 4th, shortly after landing on its leisurely trip from the Pacific Coast. Hughes and his crew will take off in it next week on a flight to Paris which may be followed by a flight around the world."

Description given with photo: "Mr. Hughes Exits Smiling, Washington, D.C. - A different Howard Hughes from the harried, sometimes angry, man who faced the Senate War Investigating Committee last week, the millionaire plane-builder is shown waving a cheerful farewell to Washington and his admirers as he boarded his converted bomber at National Airport today for his return to California. Before taking off Hughes said he has no idea of the where-abouts of his elusive public relations man, John W. Meyer. Asked if he would be back in Washington when the committee reconvenes in November, he said: "Certainly." Photograph by N.K. Benson. 8/13/47."
