Description

Oral history interview with Linh Fee conducted by Cecilia Winchell, Stefani Evans, and Jerwin Tiu on February 4, 2022 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. Linh Fee talks about her family life growing up in Oahu, Hawaii, how her parents met in Vietnam, and memories of her childhood with her six siblings. She shares how she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to find work after graduating from college at the University of Hawaii and her brief time working in the hospitality industry as a cocktail server. Fee discusses her career change to become a dental hygienist and life with her husband and three children.

Description

Tower of Jewels is one of those iconic Las Vegas businesses that continues to thrive. At the time of this interview, Jack Weinstein is in his nineties and “retired.” With him is his daughter Polly Weinstein, who in addition to being involved in the business management has her own custom designed jewelry line, aptly named The Jeweler’s Daughter. As the youngest of six children born to Jewish Russian immigrants Joseph and Pauline (Polly is named for her grandmother), Jack was raised in a dangerous neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan. His youthful enterprise included collaborating and then splitting up with his brothers in a jewelry business, before eventually moving west to Los Angles in the early 1960s. On his own, Jack became a wholesale salesperson representing lines of watches to other businesses. Included in his list of clients was Al Sanford’s Tower of Jewels in Las Vegas. Sign details: Original construction year of the building was 1949. Previous to this property being Evel pie it house the short lived F. Pigalle fondue restaurant, and the Radio City Pizza. This 1979 Evel Knievel themed pizza restaurant and bar opened in late 2016. Their motto is Live Hard, Ride Fast, Eat Pizza. In the restaurant there is an Evel Knievel Pinball machine and a Stunt Cycle Game.

Sign-specific description: Above the entrance there are red channeled cursive letters Evel Pie filled with neon tubes that illuminate red at night. To the left and right of the letters there are little white wings that are plastic but are illuminated with neon tubes I behind it.

Sign - artistic significance: The logo is the same font as Evel Knievels old advertisements. This font this was a close representation of his signature but more of a bubble font cursive letters rather than the flat signature that would have been done with a pen/pencil. Also the wings on the sign represent the theme since he was known for jumping such long distances that they said he would fly.
