Oral history interview with Jack E. Howard conducted by Michael K. Ericksen on February 27, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Howard discusses living in Overton, Nevada and shares his personal experiences and recollections about Southern Nevada, including recreational activities, education, and early hotels and casinos. Howard’s wife, Helen Howard, is also present during this interview.

Description

Ashley Hall was born April 3, 1943 in Caliente, Nevada. After high school, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad at the Nevada Test Site as a cashier and as a signalman. He later attended Brigham Young University and the University of Nevada, Reno. After college, Hall served the City of Las Vegas in significant ways. Notably, as City Manager he was instrumental in the initial development of Summerlin, Nevada. Though he has retired from local politics, he remains active as the President of the Old Spanish Trail Association and as the U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador.

The front of the postcard includes a portrait photograph of Monk, a photograph of "the old stage coach," and a photograph of a plaque on the Raffles Hotel in Placerville, California. The plaque reads: "To remember Hank Monk, the world's greatest reinsman who drove Horace Greeley from Carson City to here in 1859, making the 109 miles in 10 hours. Dedicated by E Clampus Vitus April 30, 1938."
