Searchlight, Nevada City Council Meeting Minutes and Articles of Incorporation

Abstract

The collection is comprised of city council meeting minutes, articles of incorporation, and other materials spanning 1907 to 1918 that document the incorporation of the city of Searchlight, Nevada. Included in this collection is a bound ledger containing city council meeting minutes from January 1908 to December 1911; the Articles of Incorporation for Searchlight and the Official Act of Incorporation for Searchlight, Nevada; and correspondence and other records documenting the establishment of Searchlight as an incorporated city, establishment of a municipal election to elect public officials, and the separation of Searchlight from Lincoln County and the establishment of Clark County, which was made official in 1909 by act of the Nevada Legislature.

Description given with photo: "After Non-Stop Coast to Coast Flight -- Pilot Howard Hughes (left) millionaire flier and movie producer, co-pilot Joseph Bartles, and navigator Robert Stevens, relax at the controls of their Lock-heed Constellation after landing at LaGuardia Field in new York City, Feb. 15 on Pre-Inaugural non-stop coast to coast flight from Burbank, Calif. the Constellation, named "Start of California" and carrying 34 passengers, including movie stars and a crew of seven, landed at LaGuardia Field eight hours and 38 minutes after leaving Burbank. 22/15/46."

Portrait of Las Vegas Mayor Oran K. Gragson seated at his desk in City Hall. A certificate From Delta dated June 25, 1961 and a group photograph of five men hang on the wall behind him. Oran Kenneth Gragson (February 14, 1911 – October 7, 2002) was an American businessman and politician. He was the longest-serving mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada, from 1959 to 1975. Gragson, a member of the Republican Party, was a small business owner who was elected Mayor on a reform platform against police corruption and for equal opportunity for people of all socio-economic and racial categories. Gragson died in a Las Vegas hospice on October 7, 2002, at the age of 91. The Oran K. Gragson Elementary School located at 555 N. Honolulu Street, Las Vegas, NV 89110 was named in his honor.
