In 1954, Dan Connell enrolled as a sophomore at Las Vegas High School, newly arrived from Ocean Gate, New Jersey, where his father was a New Jersey state trooper. The family’s first living space was a converted two-car garage close to McCarran airport. Living there seemed far out of town at the time; so far out that the school district could not justify providing him bus service. Instead, the family was reimbursed for his transportation costs. Dan also worked fulltime in a restaurant near McCarran Airport while going to high school. This was followed by two years in the military. Afterwards, he returned to Las Vegas, went to school, married his wife Linda, and eventually settled in the Westleigh neighborhood of Ward 1 in 1973. Westleigh remains their home, the place where they raised four sons, lived near their parents, enjoyed Sunday dinners surrounded by family and friends, and the neighborhood where their sons delivered newspapers. Johnson, Lubertha, 1906-1989

Lubterhta Miller Johnson was born on July 22, 1906 in Ackerman, Mississippi. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1943. She was a nurse, director of an anti-poverty program, a civic leader, and a director of a pre-school.

Torjman, David

David Torjman was born March 4, 1939 and raised in Fez, Morocco and was educated in trades at the ORT Vocational School. He then studied at Sunderland Talmudical College in England before immigrating to the United States. In 1964, he was recruited to teach at Temple Beth Sholom. Soon after, Torjman met Iris Schwartz who had moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to live with her aunt. Less than two years later, they had a New York wedding and then a local wedding thrown by the Sisterhood at Temple Beth Sholom. Torjman was a Hebrew school teacher until 1975.

Greenberg, Gene

In 1976, Gene Greenberg decided to accept a job transfer with Donrey Media Group and relocated from Laredo, Texas to Las Vegas. Las Vegas was comfortable fit and for the next 30 years, he primarily worked in television ad sales. He rose to become executive vice president and general manager of KVBC-TV.

Significant to Gene’s ties to Las Vegas have been his ties to the Jewish community including his active involvement with Young Leadership, Jewish Federation, and Temple Beth Sholom.
