Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. John McDaniel conducted by Daniel Malloy on October 24, 1974 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, McDaniel discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada from Mississippi in 1931. McDaniel discusses the construction of the Boulder (Hoover) Dam. He also discusses his work as a medical doctor and his family life.

Oral history interview with Jerry Vallen conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres on October 02, 2007 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview Jerry Vallen discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in June of 1967 because he was hired to work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He talks about teaching marketing at the hotel college at UNLV and how he wanted the hotel college to be independent of university administration control. He also discussed his publications, which include three textbooks.

In this interview, Guzman discusses his family's history and shares his father’s emigration story from Cuba to the United States. He recalls growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, attending Chaparral High School, living on 28th Street and Bonanza, and his career in real estate. Lastly, Guzman talks about his role as President of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chairman of Hope for Prisoners, and Vice Chairman of Workforce Connection.

Oral history interview with Renee Diamond conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 20, 2014 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Renee Diamond discusses coming to Las Vegas, Nevada via Los Angeles, California with her husband and children in the 1970s and getting involved in politics. She talks about her husband, Leo, and his business selling vinyl records in L.A., and her work in a doctor's office. Once in Las Vegas, the Diamonds joined Temple Beth Sholom and later Congregation Ner Tamid. Diamond also talks about her involvement in the political arena in southern Nevada, including the League of Women Voters.

Oral history interview with Meli Calvo Pulido conducted by Laurents Banuelos on November 13, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Pulido discusses her early life in Tijuana, Mexico and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in the mid-1970s. She talks about the challenges she faced as an English as a Second Language (ESL) student, and assisting her parents who did not speak English fluently. Lastly, Pulido describes volunteering for the non-profit organization Project 150, the work the organization does for homeless youth in Las Vegas, and assisting underprivileged students.

Dorothy Wright oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dorothy Wright conducted by Claytee Wright on April 23, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Wright opens her interview by discussing her parents and their upbringings. She then describes her father's time in the Marines during World War II and his death a few years later. Wright then talks about her stepfather and her family's move to Las Vegas, Nevada for her stepfather's job at the Nevada Test Site. Wright describes moving away from Las Vegas to attend college in Washington and, returning to Las Vegas in 1968. She talks about attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, working for the Nevada Humanities Committee, and active African American civic groups in the 1970s. Wright ends the interview highlighting some of the major Las Vegas projects she wrote grants for including the Neon Museum and the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign.

Pamela Jones Brown oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Pamela Jones Brown conducted by Claytee D. White on June 12, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Brown discusses growing up in Nashville, Tennessee and meeting her husband, Joe W. Brown, while attending Sweer Briar College and married two months later. They moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in July 1968, where she taught English and French at Brinley Junior High School. She left teaching and joined PBS/Channel 10 as a scriptwriter. The Junior League of Las Vegas became her creative outlet with the "Crossroads of the West" project that documented the history of the town. These short documentaries were produced by the local PBS statio, and she discusses writing the scripts.
