'Johnson's California, also Utah, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, published by A.J. Johnson, New York.' 'Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1864, by A.J. Johnson in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States for the southern district of New York.' Atlas page numbers in upper margin: 67-68. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian: Greenwich and Washington. Shows natural features, locations of Indian tribes, proposed railroad routes, routes of explorers, trails, county boundaries and populated places. Hand colored. On verso: 'Historical and statistical view of the West India Islands or Columbian Archipelago' (p. 80) and 'Historical and statistical view of Mexico and Central America' (p. 79). Scale [ca. 1:3,484,800]. 1 in. to ca. 55 miles (W 124°--W 102°/N 42°--N 32°).

Description given with photograph: "Howard Hughes tests the Hughes plane. Seattle--Howard Hughes (right), millionaire aviation enthusiast and record holder, shown with Edmund T. Allen, Boeing test engineer, before they made a recent test flight in a Boeing-built Stratoliner. The huge machine was equipped with extra fuel tanks for the test. Hughes did not reveal the reasons for his interest in the four-motored, 30 passenger plane, designed for substratosphere flight."

Note: It is possible that the word "Pinafore" mentioned on the cover of the menu refers to the well known Gibert and Sullivan comic opera called H.M.S. Pinafore. It was written in 1878. In 1899 this opera was revived at the Savoy Theater. It is assumed that this menu is from or the Savoy Hotel which was built next to the Savoy Theater Menu insert: Poems Restaurant: Savoy Hotel & Restaurant Location: London, England

C. -- Police escorting Howard Hughes holding hat, through the admiring throungs at the Washington Airport as the intrepid flyer and his four companions on his Round-The-World flight came to the Capital, July 21st, to personally thank Secretary of State Cordell Hull for his cooperation in clearing their take-offs on their flight.
