Abstract

The Sonny Schwartz Recordings and Papers (1928-1998) documents the career of New Jersey journalist and radio personality Sonny Schwartz. Materials include cassette tapes of Schwartz's radio program, Dateline Atlantic City, and his interviews with musicians, comedians, and other entertainers. The collection also contains an assortment of radio programming featuring performers like Frank Sinatra and Bill Cosby. Also included are Schwartz's columns from the Press of Atlantic City, a autobiographical narrative written by baseball player Johnny Bench, and photographs of Schwartz with interviewees and family.

Clark County Economic Opportunity Board Records

Abstract

The Clark County Economic Opportunity Board (CCEOB), (1962-1973) was the regional legal body responsible for receiving and administering funds in Las Vegas, Nevada allocated under the Economic Opportunity Act, a part of the Johnson's Administration's War on Poverty Program. The collection concentrates on the high funding years from 1965 until the early 1970s, when the CCEOB disbursed funds to a variety of community action programs and organizations. Records are administration and project oriented and include meeting minutes, correspondence, financial and committee reports, personnel policies, job descriptions, funding information, appointments, program officer listings, as well as project applications and program descriptions.

Maharis, Mercedes, 1942-

Mercedes Maharis is the former director of Nevada CURE and co-author of the Spartacus Project Report. She began teaching meditation in the Nevada state prison system in 1997. This led to Maharis advocating for inmates’ rights and the beginnings of the Nevada chapter of CURE. They presented the Spartacus Project Report to state leaders and at the December 5, 2000 Board of Prison Commissioners meeting. She co-authored the Spartacus Project Report along with Donald Hinton, Sr., a prisoner advocate whose son was incarcerated at the Indian Springs prison.

Franklin, Harold B. (Harold Brooks), 1889-1941

Harold Brooks Franklin was born in New York City, New York in 1889. In 1914 he entered the theatre management business, moving to Los Angeles, California in 1927. After serving as president of Fox West Coast Theatres, he formed a partnership with Howard Hughes in 1931 with the Hughes-Franklin Midwest Theatre Corporation, Incorporated. In 1933, Franklin resigned, moved back to New York, and formed an independent theatre production company. He died in Mexico City, Mexico in 1941.
