Description

Oral history interview with Alber A. Mora conducted by Rodrigo Vazquez and Laurents Bañuelos-Benitez on December 7, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Alber Mora talks about his life growing up in Cuba with his family and the circumstances of their departure from the country; his brother faced pressures to join the military, which led the Mora family to immigrate to the United States by way of a fishing boat in 1994. Alber discusses the family's lives in Houston, Texas and how he met and married his wife, Rosemary, before the couple moved to Los Angeles and Alber began working at Porto's Bakery, a famous Cuban eatery in L.A. Alber shares how he and his wife eventually moved to Las Vegas, where he works for Caesar's Palace and for the Culinary Workers Union as a Shop Steward.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Chuck Johnson conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 17, 2021, December 15, 2021, and January 14, 2022 for the Veterans Oral History Project of Southern Nevada.

Chuck discusses his enlistment in the Army at the age of 16 and his tours of duty during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He shares stories from his 21 year military career and talks about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), his injuries, and how the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 (G.I. Bill) helped him to settle in Nevada.

During his second interview session, Chuck reflects on his time spent in Korea and how he came to establish the Korean War Memorial in Boulder City, Nevada. He shares more stories from his service in Vietnam and Germany. Chuck also talks about his family's history and his mother's family tree.

During his third interview session, Chuck shares more memories of serving in Korea and Vietnam, especially the Tet Offensive attacks during the Vietnam War. He recalls stories from his childhood, including leading his high school's ROTC Color Guard for President John F. Kennedy hours before the President's assassination.

Oral history interview with David Dahan conducted by Barbara Tabach on May 26, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Dahan tells the story of his family escaping from Casablanca, Morocco and settling in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dahan also discusses establishing the Yaffa Dahan Nursing Foundation in honor of his late wife who was a Las Vegas nurse.

Oral history interview with Dan Larkin conducted by Wallace Brown in 1974 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Larkin retells his memories of President Johnson visiting Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as different recreational activities that he participated in during the 1950s. The interview concludes with Larkin explaining how Las Vegas, Nevada has remained a tourism-centric town through the years.

Oral history interview with Cynthia Leung conducted by Vanessa Concepcion, Kristel Peralta, and Stefani Evans on June 24, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Cynthia Leung shares her personal history growing up in Palm Desert, California and the story of how her artistic parents met. Cynthia's mother, a brush artist, immigrated alone from Shanghai and Taiwan to the United States where she met her husband and Cynthia's father, a Chinese-American architect. Cynthia talks about her educational pursuits and her move to Las Vegas to become a defense attorney. She discusses her career as a prosecutor before becoming the first Chinese-American women elected as a Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge, and her experiences within the court system witnessing discrimination, mental illness, and the opportunity for diversity in law.

Oral history interview with Ruth Urban conducted by Barbara Tabach on August 24, 2015 and September 16, 2015 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Urban discusses her upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada, including observations on childhood friendships, many of whom came from within the Jewish community. She talks extensively about her professional career and passion for mediation as a strategy for problem-solving. In addition, Urban describes her community service commitments over the years, including her current role with Nevadans for the Common Good.
