Abstract

Oral history interview with Keena Smith conducted by Winita Frederick on November 25, 2014 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Smith discusses her personal history and growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada. She describes what Las Vegas was like as a child, her upbringing in dance, and the significance that participating in the arts has on her life. Smith describes the auditioning process for shows in Las Vegas, her experience as an African American dancer, and being a cast member for The Lion King. Lastly, Smith talks about teaching dance courses at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Byron Shutt conducted by Jack Andrews on March 09, 1976 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Shutt discusses the history of Henderson, Nevada after moving there from Missouri in 1949. Shutt describes hitchhiking his way to Las Vegas, Nevada from Missouri, meeting Jim Thorpe in Thorpe's Henderson supper club, and the legalization of gambling in Henderson. Shutt also discusses mining operations in Henderson, chemical plants in Henderson such as the Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada plant, housing, and the Henderson school system.

Oral history interview with Brian O. Fox conducted by Cheryl S. Herr on June 16, 2006 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Fox reflects upon his 30-year career as a teacher and administrator with the Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1960s to the 1990s. He discusses his upbringing in Boulder City, Nevada, and the process by which he became principal of Boulder City High School in 1980. He describes his daily responsibilities as principal, as well as challenges and stressors that he faced. He also discusses his working relationship with assistant principals, and expectations that each position faced.
