A picture of Wovoka, also known as Jack Wilson, was the Paiute messiah from Mason Valley and the originator of the Ghost Dance religion. The Ghost Dance is incorporated into numerous American Indian belief systems and is said to unite the living spirits with the deceased. Written on the photo: "Northern Paiute - 1. This is a photograph of early Tonopah. This community came together and started this town in 1900 because of the discovery of silver-rich ore.
