UNLV Libraries Collection of Gambling Related Sheet Music

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Gambling Related Sheet Music (1890-1987) consists of primarily early 20th century American gambling-related sheet music. This collection is most noteworthy for the covers' bright and colorful imagery, including white gentlemen playing cards, imagery from card and related games, and some with offensive stereotypes and caricatures of African Americans. The material was created by a wide range of designers, composers, and publishers from various places, including New York, New York; Chicago, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; Detroit, Michigan; and Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This collection contains illustrations which depict Black and Asian individuals in racist caricatures, photographs of white individuals wearing blackface, and some song titles include derogatory language or racial slurs.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana Family Diary

Abstract

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana Family Diary (1848-1860) is a single item that contains personal accounts, diary entries, as well as handwritten and newspaper recipes, in different hands, by approximately three individuals. The first diary section begins in 1848 and mostly contains personal religious reflections and meditations on church sermons and activities. The second set of diary entries cover the years 1858 through 1860 and concerns farming, crops, and general accounts. The farm was located in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area and its primary crops were cotton, sugar cane, and corn. The third section of diary entries contain pages of handwritten recipes and some clipped from a local Baton Rouge newspaper. All the diarists are unidentified, but it was likely kept within a single family.

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Casino Promotional and Publicity Material (1966-2004) consists of clothing, promotional souvenirs, and gambling ephemera from various hotels and casinos throughout Las Vegas, Nevada. These items include hats, shirts, mugs, ash trays, drinking glasses, menus, buckets, keychains, keno supplies, and playing cards. The hotels include Caesar's Palace, Flamingo Hotel, Imperial Palace, Palace Station, Showboat, Castaways, Stardust, El Rancho, Sam's Town, Circus Circus, and Four Queens, in addition to others throughout Las Vegas.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Gaming Artifacts and Ephemera (approximately 1863-2012) is comprised of Las Vegas, Nevada casino gaming artifacts; games such as Pai Gow, Las Vegas themed board games, Piquet, and punchboards; and ephemera items about gaming. The collection contains postcards and newspaper clippings advertising for casinos in Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, the Bahamas, France, and California. The collection also contains information on gaming legislation in Europe and the United States, writings on gambling systems, gaming tickets, and various pamphlets on how to play different games such as roulette and baccarat, as well as several decks of souvenir playing cards, dice, and buttons.

The Paris, France Show Programs Collection (1950-2000) is comprised of publicity print materials of the following cabaret music halls and burlesque clubs in Paris, France: Alcazar de Paris, Casino de Paris, Folies-Bergère, Le Lido de Paris, and Moulin Rouge Paris. The collection includes programs, advertising posters, fliers, long playing record albums, photograph slides, and restaurant menus. This material was formerly known as the International Show Programs Collection.

Clinton Wright Photographs

Abstract

The Clinton Wright Photographs (1964-2018) contains black-and-white photographic negatives of various sizes, dating from 1964 to 1971. The images document the Black experience in Las Vegas, Nevada during the 1960s and 1970s, and capture scenes of everyday life in the historic Black neighborhood known as the Westside, social events such as weddings and parties, and events hosted by local churches. The collection also contains a photograph of Clinton Wright from 2017 when he visited the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections and Archives, and a memorial program for his wife, Joyce Wright, who passed away in 2018.
