Howard Hughes sitting inside the Lockheed 14 aircraft in New York. Typed on a piece of paper attached to the image: "Hughes' Paris hop delayed by motor trouble. New York City-- Howard Hughes, millionaire oil man and speed flyer, in the cabin of his huge Lockheed plane as he waited impatiently for a crew of mechanics to repair one of the motors so that he could take off for Paris. He was forced to give up his plans to leave on July 9th when mechanics found that it would be impossible to change the 18 cylinders of his motors in time. Crews worked all night at the job. Rough spots were found in the cylinders during fuel consumption tests. Credit Line (ACME) 7/10/38 Burs SF."

Description

On March 15, 1981, Steven L. Smith interviewed Edward A. Collins (born on March 16th, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois), at the Dunes Hotel and Country Club. Collins relocated to Nevada in 1955. The interview covers gender equality in the field of culinary arts in Las Vegas. Collins describes the changes he saw take place in culinary over the years. He also discusses Bugsy Siegel’s impact and influence on the emergence of big shows in the hotels on the Strip. Among other jobs, Collins worked as a captain in a showroom at the Frontier Hotel. He discusses Las Vegas before and after Howard Hughes and Bob Maheu appeared on the scene.

Frances Brewington and Ann Brewington, sisters to Ida Pittman, served as a public health nurse in Boulder City, Nevada, and as a teacher of business education at the University of Chicago, respectively.
