Description

On March 11, 1981, Melvin Thompson interviewed Richard F. Caldwell Sr. (b. 1919 in New Orleans, Louisiana) about his experiences living in Las Vegas, Nevada for over 49 years. The interview begins with Caldwell discussing his family and what brought him to Las Vegas. He then talks about working at the Nevada Test Site, the hotels and casinos that were built on the Strip, his experience working at some of those properties, and the way of life in Las Vegas in the 1940s and 1950s. The two also discuss politics, religion, and recreational gambling in the city. The interview finalizes with Caldwell’s account of the Westside of Las Vegas, African American entertainers who came to town to perform, and a brief mention of many specific historical sites in the city.

Thomas P. O’Farrell studied zoology and entomology at the University of Tennessee, where he received his Ph.D. in the 1960s. O’Farrell worked under contract with various institutions such as the Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, EG&G, the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), the United States Department of Energy (DOE), and the University of Nevada System’s Desert Research Institute (DRI).

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ruby and Bud conducted by Chuck Williams on November 23, 2012 for the Friends of Red Rock Canyon in Nevada Oral History Project. Ruby Rankin begins the interview talking about her parents when they were caretakers of Oliver Ranch near Blue Diamond, Nevada. She briefly talks about Blue Diamond school. Then, Bud Rankin joins the interview and speaks about other caretakers, exploring the property, and the Carole Lombard plane crash site. Lastly, he briefly talks about the Oliver family.
