Abstract

Oral history interviews of Westside School alumni conducted by Claytee D. White on March 20, March 29, April 27, and June 22, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project.

Alumni of the Historic Westside School of Las Vegas, also known as the Las Vegas Grammar School, gathered in 2010 to celebrate the official registration of the school as a historic site in the city. These alumni discussed their education, what they remember of the school, their teachers, and what life was like in Las Vegas at that time.

The individuals interviewed are: Jackie Y. Brantley, Eugene Buford, Margaret (Addison) Coleman, Regina Cone, Shirley Edmond, Frank Harris, Otis Harris, Tisha Harris, Willie B. (Jones) Jackson, Jerry Neal, Sadie Marie Prentiss, Calvin Wallace Jr., Nathaniel Whaley, and Cleophis Williams.

Abstract

Oral history interview with George Simmons conducted by Claytee D. White on December 13, 2013 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview George Simmons discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife Eva in 1963. He talks about racial discrimination, especially with buying a house. He then discusses his long career as an engineer with the Holmes and Naver engineering firm.

Lopez, Luciano Acevedo

Luciano Acevedo Lopez was born on January 11, 1930 in Harshaw, Arizona. Luciano married Frances on July 3, 1948 and they had four children: Julian, Eddie, Oscar, and Irene.

From 1985 to 1993 Lopez was a miner for the Nevada Test Site.

Larry Neese was born on August 26, 1929, in Ulysses, Kansas. Larry married Donna on March 6, 1966, and they had six children: Sandra, Clifford, Weston, Terry, Donnie, and Kerr.

Neese was a contractor for the Nevada Test Site and Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Company (REECo).

Sowder, Elmer Jesse

Elmer Jesse Sowder was born on January 4, 1923, in Amarillo, Texas. Elmer married Jeanie on February 14, 1996, and they had four children: Carol, Cheryl, Kerry, and Kay.

Sowder attended Texas A & M College and was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

Sowder worked as a test director for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in affiliation with the Nevada Test Site.

Campbell, Robert Martin, Jr., 1930-

Robert "Doc" Martic Campbell Jr. was morn on May 24, 1930 in San Diego, California. Robert married Jeanne C. on June 25, 1957 and they had two children: Robert M. Campbell and Richard M. Campbell.

Campbell obtain his GED and has an extensive military background.

Campbell was affiliated with the Nevada Test Site as he was attached to the BuMedUnitOne as a junior hospitalman for the United States Navy in the Bio Medical Unit.
