The Nevada, United States, and international case studies series (1970-2010) contains subject files for Clark County and Nye County, Nevada, as well as reports and files for the states of California, New Mexico, and Southern Nevada. The materials consist of subject files and reports concerning the potential socioeconomic, environmental, and health and safety impacts from the site itself to these counties, states, and nations. The Nye County materials contain research interests on radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel from the Nevada Test Site and other military installations in Nevada. Internationally, the series contains research interests on tribal nations within the U.S., such as the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians, and contentions from the Timbisha Shoshone toward the Yucca Mountain repository.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Barbara and David Lowe conducted by Claytee D. White on December 08, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. David Lowe begins the interview by discussing his family history, how they came to own a hotel in Goodsprings, Nevada, and life in the town during the early twentieth century. Barbara Lowe then describes her upbringing in San Francisco, California before moving with her family to Hawthorne, Nevada. She also discusses race relations there and in other Nevada and California towns. David Lowe then talks about his mother, Celeste Lowe, who became a writer and was later hired by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where she worked in Special Collections at the James R. Dickinson Library. David continues, talking about his career in journalism, working at the Nevada Test Site, and the university hospital. They also discuss the controversy surrounding the UNLV mascot and the cultural differences between Northern and Southern Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Victoria and Brad Babich conducted by Claytee D. White on November 22, 2013 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, the Babich couple describe their family histories and life in Las Vegas, Nevada during the mid-twentieth century. Brad Babich discusses his father's work in the gaming industry of Las Vegas, the prevalence of organized crime in the city, the influence of Howard Hughes and the federal government, and other aspects of Las Vegas history. He also talks about nuclear weapons tests at the Nevada Test Site and the health problems some employees acquired there. The two talk about recreational activities of the time, as well as the entertainers that performed on the Las Vegas Strip. Other topics of discussion include race relations in Las Vegas, casino history, and changes that have occurred over the years in the city.
