Abstract

Oral history interviews with Gudrun Fonfa conducted by Dennis McBride on June 15, 2008 and June 22, 2008 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In these interviews, Fonfa discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1981 and describes the lesbian community at the time. She talks about the founding of organizations to support the rights of the gay community. Fonfa discusses her contributions to Nevadans for Human Rights (NHR) and the development of the gay community. Lastly, Fonfa describes Women United of Nevada (WUN) and the organization's decision to change their mission statement.

Abstract

Documenting the African American Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada Web Archive is comprised of archived websites captured primarily in 2017 that are related to UNLV University Libraries community documentation project, "Documenting the African American Experience in Las Vegas." Archived websites represent religious institutions, civic and service organizations, and local businesses in the Las Vegas Valley. The collection includes archived websites of organizations like the local NAACP branch, the Urban Chamber of Commerce, Westside School Alumni Foundation, 100 Black Men of Las Vegas, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Psi Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Valorie J. Vega oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Valorie J. Vega conducted by Laurents Bañuelos-Benitez on November 19, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Vega discusses her upbringing in Van Nuys, California. She describes her father’s employment with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, her attendance at California State University, Northridge, and majoring in Spanish with a minor in Chicano studies. Vega recalls entering a master’s program for Spanish interpretation, moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1978, and becoming a supervisor for court interpreters. Later, Vega talks about enrolling in law school at the University of Southern California (USC), working as a Clark County deputy attorney, and later becoming a judge. Lastly, Vega discusses her experience being a female Hispanic judge, and her involvement with the Huellas Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Web Archive on the October 1, 2017 Shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada

Abstract

The collection is comprised of captured websites and Twitter data related to the mass shooting that occured at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 1, 2017. Captured websites are primarily comprised of articles and news stories from local, national, and international news media outlets. Websites were captured periodically from 2017 to 2018. The collection also includes Twitter data associated with the October 1 shooting that were captured via concurrent queries to the Twitter API for all Tweets containing the term “vegas” occuring September 29, 2017 to October 7, 2017. Also included are files containing tutorials for how to curate and analyze Twitter data which reference the 1 October Twitter dataset for illustrative purposes.

The UNLV Student Organizations Web Archive (2020-2024) is comprised of archived websites captured from 2020 to 2024 that represent student activities at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Websites include digital platforms and social media account for the student-run newspaper, the UNLV Scarlet & Gray (previously known as The Scarlet & Gray Free Press). Other websites include the Student Involvement & Activities unit that oversees student programming and student groups at UNLV and the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada (CSUN), which represents the governing body of the undergraduate student population at UNLV.

Abstract

The Southern Nevada Governance Web Archive is comprised of archived websites captured from 2016 to 2017 that are representative of local government agencies in Southern Nevada. Cities represented in the collection include Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Mesquite, and Pahrump. The collection also includes websites for regional agencies and authorities such as the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, the Las Vegas Valley Water District, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Jarbidge, Nevada Community Archives Collection

Abstract

The Jarbidge, Nevada Community Archives Collection contains scanned images from seven archival collections and document the community of Jarbidge, Nevada from approximately 1910 to 2006. The materials were collected from various families living in Jarbidge in 2006 as part of a project led by Carrie Townley Porter. The images depict early Jarbidge structures, surrounding landscape, the Elkoro Mine, and residents of the area. Also included are images of certificates, correspondence, and newspaper articles relating to the families' histories. Also included in the collection are written summaries of ten oral history interviews of Jarbidge residents conducted in 2006. This collection contains digital surrogates only; the owners and Jarbidge Community Archives retain the originals.

Oral history interview with J. K. Russ conducted by Claytee D. White on December 22, 2017 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. In this interview, Russ discusses her early life in New Zealand and growing up on a tobacco farm. She remembers arriving to the United States and establishing a career as an artist. Russ talks about the 1 October shooting, creating an art exhibit using cards and letters received from people all over the world, and Las Vegas’ response to the tragedy. Lastly, Russ describes the art community in Las Vegas and the Arts District.
