When the cattle were branded, a small piece of ear was removed from each cow. The piece of ear went into the cowboys’ pockets and the ear pieces were later tallied. Here O.K. Reed (kneeling) is tallying ear pieces. Cuny Kerns, an Indian, is on the far left, next to Frank May.
