Montes, Frances

Frances "Fran" Montes is the first woman to serve as president of Hispanics in Politics (HIP) and one of a small number of Hispanic women who are acknowedged as spokespersons for the diverse Hispanic community in the Las Vegas Valley. She is the Diversity Officer for Bechtel Nevada Corporation, a member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Community Advisory Board of the Women's Research Institute of Nevada, and one of the earliest members of NALA (Nevada Association of Latin Americans).

Woodward, Alice, 1905-1972

Alice Woodward was born in Texas and graduated from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1930. she married Herbert Spencer Woodward in 1932 in Los Angeles, California. Herbert worked as a miner and the couple relocated to Nevada in 1935. She worked as a teacher in Sandy Valley from 1935 to 1940 and then in Goodsprings from 1945 to 1950. She lived in Goodsprings until her death in July 1972.

Stafford, Mary Elizabeth, 1932-2003

Mary Elizabeth Diggs was born on May 4, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio to Julia Foster Nelson and Vernal Albert Diggs. She married John Tom Pearson but the couple divorced. She married George Oliver Stafford on November 15, 1963 in Henderson, Nevada. He passed away in 1980 and she married Phillip Theodore Hubel. Mary died on May 15, 2003 in Henderson, Nevada.

Stiver, Do, 1922-

Sara Lois "Do" Johnson was born April 5, 1922 to Olive Fisher and Earl Johnson in Pasadena, California. She lived in Pasadena until 1946. She married William Harvey Stiver on March 8, 1946 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was active in the local tennis community. Harvey Stiver operated a gas and service station in Las Vegas. He passed away in 1975. She later moved to Prescott, Arizona.

Whitmore, Mark J., 1947-

Mark J. Whitmore is the son of Suzette and Sidney Whitmore. He was born in Washington D.C. on August 23, 1947. He graduated from Western High School in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1965. He served in the United States Army after high school. He later graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in hotel administration in 1974.

Cotton, D. D., 1935-2009

Ethel Dolores "D.D." Cotton was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 15. 1935. Raised in New York City, Cotton arrived in Las Vegas as a dancer in Cab Calloway's traveling production "The Cotton Club." During a period of strained race relations, she stood for equal rights as the first black cocktail waitress on the Strip and one of the first black dealers.

Cashman, James, Jr., 1926-2005

James Cashman Jr. was the son of Las Vegas pioneer James Cashman Sr. and Leah Barker. Like his father, James Jr. was a civic and business leader in the region. The Cashman Family is an inductee of the UNLV Business Hall of Fame.
