Oral history interview with Kathleen Becker and Ernest A. Becker IV conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on January 30, 2017 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Kathleen and Ernest IV discusses their upbringing in Southern California. Kathleen talks about her father’s career as a landscape architect, and his involvement with the design of the El Rancho Hotel and Casino. Ernest IV discusses his family’s involvement in Las Vegas, Nevada development, building shopping centers, and building homes during the 1960s. Lastly, Kathleen and Ernest IV discuss their building development business.

Oral history interview with Carole Fisher conducted by Barbara Tabach on December 14, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Fisher discusses her family background and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979. Fisher talks about Nathan Adelson Hospice, programs that they provide for the Las Vegas senior community, and the increase of hospices in Las Vegas. She describes how Nathan Adelson Hospice is able to provide care for uninsured people, fundraising events they organize, and how their hospice differs from traditional hospital care. Lastly, Fisher discusses the significance of death in the Jewish religion.

Oral history interview with Brad Jerbic and Tom Perrigo conducted by Claytee D. White on June 26, 2019 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. Brad Jerbic and Tom Perrigo share their experiences working with landscape architect Jay Pleggenkuhle to create the Healing Garden of Las Vegas after the October 1 shooting. They discuss how the community was in need of a place to mourn and heal after the tragedy, and how imperative it was for the space to be constructed quickly. Brad and Thomas share how the garden was constructed in four days and the various members of the community who helped to make it possible.

Carol Terry's "Germans in Las Vegas" Oral History Project (2007) contain the oral histories conducted by Terry while researching for a chapter on Germans in Las Vegas, Nevada for The Peoples of Las Vegas book. Terry interviewed over 60 individuals and the collection contains the printed transcripts and audiocassettes from each interview.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ethel Smith and Barbara Carter McCalister conducted by Claytee D. White on March 3, 2021 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. Barbara Carter and Ethel Smith grew up on the Westside in the 1950s, both born in the late 1940s. They attended the Westside School. Their memories of the city are colorful, vibrant, and clear. They loved school and excelled in the assigned work. After high school, before their chosen careers, both tried work as a maid and found the sexual harassment a real challenge. Their memories of entertainment, fun, customs, and business locations on Jackson Avenue and the surrounding Black business community, related on their walk down memory lane, provided good historical information. Barbara Carter entered banking at Valley Bank and Ethel Smith, the casino industry, at a time when the MOB ran Las Vegas. Their recollections remind us that businesses operated differently and these women were there to witness it. Subjects discussed include: Westside, Jackson Ave, MOB, La Concha Motel, Berkley Square, Valley Bank, Caesars Palace, Ash Resnick, Jackson Hotel.

Description

Oral history interview with Jose Leonardo Martinez conducted by Barbara Tabach and Nathalie Martinez on August 19 and 29, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Session 1: Jose discusses his childhood and what it was like growing up during the Salvadoran Civil War. He recounts the dangers he's faced and how he made his way to the United States after traveling through Guatemala and Mexico. Subjects discussed include: Salvadoran Civil War; Ciudad Arce, El Salvador; Guatemala; Mexico; Los Angeles, California. Session 2: Jose continues his discussion of growing up in El Salvador and the violence he witnessed in the country's army during the 1980s. He also talks about his personal life after moving to the United States and his experiences navigating gang culture in Los Angeles, California. Jose recounts his previous jobs, his schooling, how he met his wife, and his family's move to Las Vegas. Subjects discussed include: El Salvador army; gang violence.
