Abstract

Oral history interview with Mary Stafford conducted by Gale Robinson on March 05, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Stafford discusses her personal history and the history of Henderson, Nevada. Stafford describes living in Henderson during the 1950s and the importance of the Basic Magnesium Plant during World War II. She then talks about how Henderson has grown and the different chemical plants that opened in the town. Stafford goes on to discuss her career working for the local newspaper, Henderson Home News, and later becoming a reporter for the publication. Stafford also discusses other newspapers in Nevada, prominent figures she has met, and flash floods.

Mulidore discusses his career as a jazz musician in Las Vegas, Nevada and working with musicians such as Sammy Davis, Jr., the Rat Pack, and Nat King Cole. He also discusses working in the El Rancho Hotel and Casino before the fire, and going on tour with the Billy May Band.

Oral history interview with Sandy Croteau conducted by Claytee D. White on January 18, 2024 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Croteau discusses the history of Tule Springs area, which covers over 13,000 acres and how she became involved in turning the area into Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. Croteau is a retired real estate professional and a National Parks volunteer. She recalls growing up in Los Angeles and Downey, California and engaging in outdoor activities with her father and brothers, which paved the way for her work on Tule Springs.

Stewart discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1984 to work as an entertainer, and later his other careers as an elementary school teacher and as a library specialist. He also talks about buying a house in the John S. Park Neighborhood that was built in the 1940s and being a neighborhood association president.

Oral history interview with Bill Armstrong conducted by Anthony Robone on February 20, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In the interview, Armstrong discusses his time bootlegging in Kentucky before arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada, his involvement with the Las Vegas dealers, and the weather as it relates to other parts of the country. He also discusses the impacts of the work of Howard Hughes on the town, the construction of Hoover Dam, the above-ground atomic testing, the growth of Las Vegas and tourism, changes in gambling habits for the next generation, and the social and recreational activities of residents.
