Abstract

Oral history interview with Mary Carol Melton conducted by Kathy Ricks on March 05, 1981 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Melton discusses early life in Henderson, Nevada and recalls the development of the United Methodist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. Melton speaks about moving to Las Vegas because of her husband’s health, her time working with attorney offices and in the Las Vegas Courthouse, and the different homes in which her family lived. Moreover, Melton talks extensively about starting the first Sunday school in North Las Vegas in a garage as well as the church she and her husband built. Melton discusses the programs and minstrels performed in the church, the crafts sold to make money for the church and the organ they purchased. Lastly, Melton talks about going to the Hoover Dam nearly every week to see new developments, her participation in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and watching the above ground atomic tests.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Anna Jennings Welsh conducted by Judith Siu on July 05, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Welsh begins by describing her family's history in Las Vegas, Nevada, beginning in 1911 with her grandmother. She discusses her grandmother's life and her collection of artifacts, which would later become part of the Southern Nevada Museum by the Henderson, Nevada Chamber of Commerce (now the Clark County Museum). Welsh continues talking about her own life, including her education, hobbies, family, friends, and living in Las Vegas. She also discusses nuclear weapons testing, the history of casinos in Las Vegas, her father's work constructing Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam), and how Las Vegas has changed.

Katherine D. Beal interviews truck driver and fireman Wesley Troy Adams (b. 1930) at his home in Henderson, Nevada. Born in Modena, Utah, Adams relocated to Nevada in 1959. Adams discusses LDS church organization and affiliation, celebrations in Caliente, Pioche, and Panaca. Also during the interview, Adams offers insight into raising a family in Southern Nevada, Bottle House in Pittman, atomic testing, and shares his philosophical views on life. Adams wife is also present during the interview.
