Abstract

The Robert E. "Spud" Lake Photographs depict "Spud" Lake, his family, and Las Vegas, Nevada from 1905 to 1947. The photographs include the Las Vegas town site auction, Stewart (Kiel) Ranch, Clark County Courthouse, Eglington Ranch, Helldorado Parade, and Colorado River and the Hoover (Boulder) Dam. The photographs also depict a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon honoring Las Vegas pioneers, the Gold Bar Club tent in Pahrump, Nevada, and Fremont Street in Las Vegas.

Abstract

The James H. Down Jr. Photograph Collection (approximately 1915-1940) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives, as well as color photographic slides and postcards. The images depict scenes in and around Las Vegas and Goodsprings, Nevada. Also included are Glenn Davis' photographs of the Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam), Black Canyon, the Colorado River, and Lake Mead. Most of the images portray the construction phases of the Hoover Dam.

Leonard Stubbs oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Leonard Stubbs conducted by Jay Brewer on April 09, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Stubbs begins by describing his father's history as a merchant in Boulder City, Nevada, life in Boulder City during the construction of Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam) and World War II, and what the local school system was like. Stubbs discusses how Boulder City has developed economically through commerce, how the city has grown, and owning his own businesses. Stubbs concludes by talking about the formation of Lake Mead and the Mormon Church's history in Boulder City. Rose Stubbs, Leonard's wife, contributes some additional comments.

Black and white image of officials from the Six Companies of San Francisco and the Bureau of Reclamation, as well as some local individuals, signing the contract to construct Hoover Dam (note: Boulder Dam was officially renamed Hoover Dam in 1947). Dr. Elwood Mead is signing the contract. Seated next to him is Henry J. Kaiser. Also identified in the photograph (in no particular order) are W.R. Armstrong, Walker Young, R.F. Walter, and Louis Crampton.
