Abstract

Oral history interviews with Unette and Richard King conducted by Claytee D. White on March 19, 2015 and January 30, 2018 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Richard King begins by describing his early upbringing in Canada before moving to the United States, and eventually moving to Nevada in 1940. He talks about living in Whitney, Nevada before moving to the Huntridge area of Las Vegas, Nevada and describing life in the two places during World War II. He also discusses his father's life and career, working for the railroad in Las Vegas, working as a journeyman printer for Pop Squires, and later owning several newspaper publications, which included the Whitney News, Las Vegas Tribune, Hendersonian, Henderson Herald, and North Las Vegas Sun. Unette King describes her upbringing as a Las Vegas native and her father, who was a construction worker for the Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam). Throughout the interviews, the couple discuss Las Vegas history and aspects of life in the city, including the development of casinos, recreation activities, race relations, and how the city has changed. The two conclude the interview by discussing their reaction to the 1 October mass shooting in Las Vegas, how the city came together following the shooting, and accusations of sexual harassment against Steve Wynn.

Oral history interview with Valerie Chapman Eliot and Connie Pooley conducted by Su Kim Chung on January 30, 2013 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Eliot begins the interview by discussing her upbringing in England, her early dancing career in France in the Bluebell Girls dancing troupe, and working with Donn Arden. She continues, describing the other countries where she performed, including Argentina and Cuba, before eventually going to Las Vegas, Nevada during the 1960s to dance in productions at the Stardust Resort and Casino. She describes the life of a dancer, the differences between dancers and showgirls, and life in Las Vegas during the 1960s. Connie Pooley was also present for this interview.

Oral history interview with Richard Hooker conducted by Claytee D. White on June 10, 2014 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Hooker discusses his work as an artist and cultural practitioner for the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs. He recalls his background in political science and his employment with the Nevada Arts Council. Hooker then describes the projects he was involved with, including preserving neon signs and the formation of the Neon Museum.

Oral history interview with Norman A. Craft conducted by Claytee D. White on August 06, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Craft discusses Henderson, Nevada in the 1940s, Victory Village, and Townsite housing and schooling. He then describes teaching at Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada and recalls the application of the Title IX ruling on education. Lastly, Craft discusses race relations at Rancho High School, school riots, and the passing of the Civil Rights Act.

Oral history interview with Jack Wesley Day conducted by Claytee D. White on August 19, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Day begins by discussing his upbringing and his service in the United States Army. He describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1961 to work as a teacher at Rancho High School before joining the Clark County School District administration in 1963. Day talks about race relations at Rancho High School, life in Las Vegas during the 1960s, and being the coordinator for manpower development training classes between the Nevada Department of Education, the federal government, and the Clark County School District. Day also describes the early years of Vo-Tech High School and other aspects of the history of Clark County School District, as well as his experiences working for the district.

Oral history interview with Donna L. Miller conducted by Claytee D. White on July 15, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Miller begins by describing her early upbringing on her family's potato farm in Oregon before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. She discusses attending Las Vegas High School, joining the Rhythmettes, the school's female dance group, and her experiences in the Rhythmettes, including where she performed and the team's coach, Evelyn Stuckey. Miller also briefly discusses working as a secretary at the Sahara Hotel and Casino and real estate in Las Vegas.

Carole Vilardo oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Carole Vilardo conducted by Derek Armstrong and Claytee D. White on August 11, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Vilardo discusses the implementation of a sales tax to further fund education in Nevada. She then describes her first legislative session in 1973 and describes Nevada property taxes. Later, Vilardo explains the significance of taxes and how changes in tax rates are made. Lastly, Vilardo recalls lobbying for certain bills and explains the tax structure in Nevada at the time.
