In the 1950s and 1960s, Nevada experienced a nursing shortage, largely as a result of the lack of nursing schools in the state and rapid population growth. To address the problem, the Nevada Board of Regents approved the implementation of an associate degree program at the campus of Nevada Southern University (now known as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas) in 1965, and that fall the first students were admitted.

The mission of the Urban Chamber of Commerce is to create and foster an environment that promotes development of members and black owned businesses. The Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce was founded July 7, 1980, after the idea was planted by Katherine Joseph. Ms. Joseph met with members of the Oakland, California Chamber of Commerce during a visit there and was very impressed with their efforts. When Katherine returned home she shared the idea with members of the NAACP. She solicited the help of Sarann Knight-Preddy who formed a board consisting of Dr.

The Nevada Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) was established on Saturday, October 14, 2000. The UBE has worked to eradicate, eliminate, and neutralize racism within the Episcopal Church. It has led the way to reform the practices, policies, procedures, and systems that impede effective participation of Black Episcopalians in the total Church. It has fostered transformation for all members of the church as they move away from dividedness toward togetherness with the corporate and spiritual body of Christ.
