Abstract

Oral history interview with Michael Bryant conducted by Claytee D. White on August 05, 2013 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Bryant details life in the Westside community of Las Vegas, Nevada, his personal history, and life as an African American in Las Vegas. He describes his upbringing in Las Vegas, his father's high-end clothing store, and race relations between the African American and white communities of the city. Bryant also discusses casinos and other Las Vegas attractions, such as the presence of famous celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Muhammad Ali, as well as discussing the development of the Westside community. Julia Walton was also present for this interview.

Oral history interview with Louis Conner conducted by John Grygo on March 22, 2013 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Conner discusses his personal history and growing up in Tallulah, Louisiana. He talks about moving to Las Vegas, Nevada with his family for job opportunities in the late 1950s. Conner describes his employment at the Stardust Hotel, segregation, and living in West Las Vegas. He then talks about integration in the mid-1960s, Jackson Street entertainment, and the changing demographic of the Westside. Lastly, Conner discusses the development of Las Vegas, families moving out of the Westside, and new businesses in the area.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Augusta Massey conducted by Steve Hayes on November 14, 2011 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Massey discusses her early life in Nigeria, moving to Memphis, Tennessee, and then relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008. She talks about her educational experience in Memphis and compares social life in the South and the West. Massey describes her career in law, working in various law firms in Las Vegas, and starting mentoring programs for new attorneys. Lastly, Massey discusses the importance of scholarships for students in law school, her involvement with the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association (LVNBA), and why it is important for lawyers to be active in the LVNBA.

Abstract

The Schuyler Family Photograph Collection (1889-2024) contains documents, census record forms, photographic prints and negatives, and ephemera which document the history of the Schuyler, Cahlan, and related families. The collection contains photographic prints of Donald Schuyler Sr. and his wife, Freda Schuyler, at various events and places around Las Vegas, Nevada. Some of the images also include members of the Cahlan and Ullom families, noteably A. E. Cahlan and his wife, Ruth, who were prolific Las Vegan authors. Some items in this collection are digital surrogates. This collection was previously called the Donald Schuyler Jr. Photograph Collection.

Abstract

The Las Vegas News Bureau Photograph Collection consists of black-and-white and color photographic prints, negatives, and slides depicting Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1940 to 1989. The images primarily depict hotels on the Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, including Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, the Flamingo Hotel & Casino, and the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino. Also included are images of the convention center in Las Vegas and Cashman Field, as well images of entertainers performing on the Las Vegas Strip. The collection consists entirely of photographic reproductions.

Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada Photograph Collection (approximately 1970-1979) consists of laminated black-and-white photographic reproductions that depict various Native American tribal groups in Nevada from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Northern Paiute, Southern Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe tribes are represented in the collection. The images depict individuals attending Indian Day School, posing with items they crafted, and going about daily life. All items in this collection are reproductions provided by the Nevada Historical Society and the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada.

The Lloyd Gill Photograph Collection (1979) consists of reproduction black-and-white photographic prints and negatives of images Gill took in Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1960 to 1969. The images depict black residents' experiences at Las Vegas hotels, casinos, and nightclubs in the predominantly black West Las Vegas. Locations include the Carver House Hotel and Casino, the El Rio Club, Town Tavern, the Cove Hotel, and the Brown Derby Club.
