Abstract

Oral history interview with Katrina Sandigo conducted by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach on August 28, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Katrina talks about her family's history and her grandfather's immigration to the United States from Nicaragua. She discusses her education and her time spent studying at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and her work with the Clark County School District (CCSD). She is currently the Education Director for Nevada's Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Katrina also shares her religious faith and how she is active in the Jewish community of Las Vegas.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Olivia Díaz conducted by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach on August 31 and September 14, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In the first interview, Díaz gives her family and personal history, growing up in Las Vegas but often visiting her family in Durango, Mexico for extended stays. She recalls her matriarchal upbringing, particularly while living in Mexico, and what life was like growing up and going to school in East Las Vegas and at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Subjects discussed include: Mexico; Latina identity. In the second interview, Díaz talks about her English language education career for the Clark County School District (CCSD) and the events that led her to run for Nevada Assembly and Las Vegas City Council. She is presently Nevada's Assemblywoman for District 11 and Las Vegas' Councilwoman for Ward 3. Olivia concludes her interview with insights into her political and educational goals for the community and the initiatives she has focused on in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carmen discusses her personal history growing up in Barranquilla, Colombia and her professional aspirations in her present work; she is the founder of the Colombian Association of Nevada, a former member of the Professional Latina Women organization in Las Vegas, and has worked with Senator Harry Reid as a representative of the Colombian community related to voting rights and access. Oral history interview with Royal Herald Byron III conducted by Claytee D. White on March 19, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Byron discusses his upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada and growing up in the Westside community. He talks about his early interest in barbering, attending barber school in Los Angeles, California, and establishing a barber school in Las Vegas. Byron describes serving the homeless community and the importance of sanitation as a barber. Lastly, Byron discusses the expansion of his barber school to include locations in Henderson, the Westside, and Reno, Nevada.

Oral history interview with Rosa Lee Brewer, Maxine Westby, and Angelia Carter conducted by Claytee D. White on April 17, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Brewer discusses her early life in Birmingham, Alabama and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1957. Brewer and Westby remember living in the Westside, J Street and Jackson Street businesses, and the issue of homelessness in that area. Later, Brewer, Westby, and Carter discuss the schools on the Westside and school integration. Lastly, Brewer, Westby, and Carter discuss changes in the Westside.
