Giller was raised in Reno, Nevada, where his family owned AIDS Ambulance. He worked as a dispatcher before earning his EMT certifications in the 1980s.

After graduating from Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, Gunter worked for Mercy Ambulance. He later worked as a paramedic at the Mercury Test Site, which helped pay for medical school at the University of Nevada.

Lowell Moody was fire chief of the Hawthorne Volunteer Fire Department in the 1940s, and his family has continued service at the Hawthorne Valley Fire Department in the following decades.
