Sylvia Saavedra is a native Las Vegan and a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she earned BA and MBA degrees. Sylvia worked as a bilingual Court Counselor in the Lower Court of the City of Las Vegas. As a result of her positive experiences working in the Lower Court, she decided to attend Law School at the University of San Diego and today practices law in Las Vegas.

Born and educated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Olga Carbia emigrated to the United States in 1968. She became a U.S. Citizen in 1981. Olga speaks five languages and her special talent is working with Spanish-speaking clients and senior citizens.

Description

Equal rights and equal employment opportunity - the rights of all persons to work and to advance on the basis of merit, ability, and potential. These concepts are deeply rooted in our American heritage. But prior to the Civil Rights Movement these rights were severely restricted by discriminatory practices that operated against various groups in our society, among which were Hispanics. In the State of Nevada, Delia Martinez, pictured above framed by her many achievement and recognition awards, was appointed by Governor Richard Bryan to direct the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, the State agency responsible for investigating claims of discrimination and sexual harassment on the job.

Working behind the scene to ensure our safety, Reuben Sanchez, Jr., an Electronics Technician with the Federal Aviation Administration, is pictured above repairing a highly technical machine. Sanchez has the vitally important job of making sure that all communications, radar and computer systems are safe for utilization in the control of air traffic at McCarran International Airport.

Description

With the rapidly expanding Hispanic student population in the Clark County school district, a demand for teachers, counselors, and administrators sensitive to the special needs of this segment of the student body became apparent. Gina Valverde White, a Cuban refugee, works to address those needs. Starting her career as a classroom teacher, she went on to become the Assistant Principal at Las Vegas High School and is now Assistant Principal of the Washington Alternative Programs School. She is shown here working with Hispanic high school students.

Description

Hope Lezcano has always loved and worked with children. First in her native Cuba, from which she emigrated in 1954, and then in the United States in California and Florida, and finally in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she moved in 1967. After working for the Clark County School District and pursuing childhood development courses at the Clark County Community College, Lezcano opened her own group nursery, Tender Loving Care. Her nursery cares for newborn infants up to age two.

Description

Al Rivero, Chief Bailiff for District Court Judge John Mendoza, grew up with John Mendoza in West Las Vegas during the 1930s and 1940s. They played together on the famous 1944 Las Vegas High School football team that was so good it made Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Rivero was Mendoza's bailiff for all of the 23 years that Mendoza served as a District Court Judge.

Pictured left to right are Arturo Cambeiro, the first President of the Latin Chamber of Commerce (1967-79), Mayor of the City of Las Vegas, Bill Briare (standing), and Governor of the State of Nevada, Mike O'Callaghan. The photograph documents one of the earliest meetings of the newly formed Latin Chamber of Commerce of Nevada with important elected officials.

The six Hispanics were part of a larger group who met President Clinton on the tarmac at the foot of Air Force One.
