Abstract

The Jeanne Russell Janish Papers span the years 1833 through 1994 with an emphasis on 1894 to 1994. The materials of the illustrator and watercolorist include her school records, research papers, diaries, and personal correspondence. There are two original book manuscripts, dried flowers, hand-woven rugs, a variety of art supplies and tools, and approximately 140 watercolor paintings and pencil sketches of various scenes and subjects, created in China, Florida, and the American Southwest.

Abstract

The Adele Baratz papers mainly consist of photographs documenting Adele Baratz's life in Las Vegas, Nevada from the 1930s to 2010. An essay and list of names written by Baratz's brother, Charles Salton, document the early history of the Jewish community in Las Vegas.

Penelope Ruchman Collection of Las Vegas, Nevada Casino Professionals Oral Histories

Abstract

The Penelope Ruchman Collection of Las Vegas, Nevada Casino Professionals Oral Histories includes interviews conducted by Ruchman from approximately 1999 to 2001 of casino industry workers who worked in Las Vegas, Nevada. The majority of interviews were conducted by Ruchman in their office at Gambler's Book Shop (GBS), but some where conducted in interviewee's homes and offices, or over the phone. The collection represents Ruchman's efforts to interview and document a generation of early casino industry workers that were quickly aging. The project was intended to be compiled as a definitive history of Las Vegas and American gambling, entitled "After the Gold Rush." The project was permanently postponed in the fall of 2001 when Ruchman left GBS to work for Park Place Entertainment as a corporate business and operations analyst, and later as casino operations director for Caesars Palace. Not all interviews have digital transcripts available.

Lucille Matyas oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Lucille Matyas conducted by Irene Rostine on November 18, 2010 and December 02, 2010 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Matyas opens her interview by discussing her family's move to Las Vegas, Nevada and her mother's turbulent marriage to a Las Vegas constable in 1935. She then describes working at the phone company after school to avoid the dangers of her home life. She discusses learning to repair switchboards, saving equipment parts during wartime rationing, and listening in to the private conversations of repairmen. Matyas then describes family gatherings in Ohio before her family's move to Nevada. She later returns to talking about working at the telephone company and describes the issues customers had with party lines and the lack of telephone lines to serve the growing population of Las Vegas. Matyas ends her interviews discussing other memorable experiences she had working at the telephone company.

The images were created or collected by Las Vegas photographer Glenn Davis and include images of the construction on the Hoover Dam (formerly known as the Boulder Dam), landscapes, gaming, and residents of the region.

The Spencer and Georgia Hanna Butterfield Photograph Collection (approximately 1900-1978) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives of the Hanna and Butterfield families. It also contains images of early and prominent residents of Las Vegas, Nevada such as James Cashman Sr., Las Vegas Chamber of Congress members, Union Pacific Railroad president George Ashby, and many other notable persons from early Las Vegas. The collection also includes photographs taken in Elko County, Nevada, the Hoover Dam, and other Las Vegas area images.

Abstract

The Claudine Williams Photograph Collection (approximately 2007-2009) consists of nine optical disks containing ninety-eight digital surrogate images dating between 1940 and 2000. The images primarily portray Claudine Williams in publicity images for various hotel and casinos Williams and her husband owned alongside prominent individuals, including Dean Martin, Hillary and Bill Clinton, and Robert Reich. Other images depict Williams in her youth and with her family members. Additional materials include images of Williams’ business cards, articles in various Las Vegas and Nevada magazines and newspapers on Williams, and images of properties Williams operated.

Chester Longwell Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Chester Longwell Photograph Collection consists of 608 black-and-white photographic prints dating from approximately 1910 to 1930. The images primarily depict the Longwell family's excursions in the Southern Nevada region, primarily to Mount Charleston, Nevada. Also included are images of Southern Nevada mines and mining towns, as well as Pubelo Grande de Nevada, the Lost City. The remaining images depict geological formations and features, as well as forestry and nature scenes in Nevada and Arizona.
